Israeli troops attacked Palestinian student protesters at Al Quds University in Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem, on Saturday. Dozens of students were treated for tear gas inhalation.
The soldiers did not limit their firing of tear gas to students participating in the protest, but also invaded the university campus and fired tear gas indiscriminately at the students.
Many of the students are Muslim, and practicing a sunrise-to-sunset fast during the holy month of Ramadan. This fast includes water, so inhaling tear gas is especially dangerous for students who are fasting from water.
Israeli troops set up additional military roadblocks around the university and nearby villages, closing the road linking the villages of Al-Sawahrah Al-Sharqiya and Abu Dis.
The students had organized the protest to oppose the Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people, especially in Jerusalem and Jenin. Over 100 Palestinians were wounded by Israeli forces near al-Aqsa mosque on Friday while they were trying to pray in the third-holiest site in Islam.
