WAFA: “Remembering the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre of 1994”

RAMALLAH, Friday, February 25, 2022 (WAFA) – On this day in 1994, a US-born Israeli military physician walked into the Ibrahimi Mosque in Hebron armed with a Galil assault rifle. It was early morning during the holy month of Ramadan, and hundreds of Palestinians were gathered inside, bowed in prayer.

Baruch Goldstein, who had emigrated to occupied Palestine in 1983, lived in the Kiryat Arba settlement on the outskirts of the city. As worshippers kneeled, Goldstein opened fire. He reloaded at least once, continuing his barrage for as long as possible before finally being overpowered and eventually beaten to death. By the time he was stopped, 29 worshippers were killed, and more than a hundred had been injured.

The Israeli government immediately released a statement condemning the act and stating that Goldstein acted alone and was psychologically disturbed.

The massacre was widely reported in the international media – but many Palestinians here continue to believe that the full story has never been told.

The twenty-nine people killed inside the mosque were not the only martyrs that day. Locals estimate the final number of deaths at between 50 and 70 – and an estimated 250 were injured over the course of the day.

After the initial attack inside the mosque, more Palestinians were killed by the Israeli army during protests outside the mosque, outside Hebron’s Ahli hospital, and even in the local cemetery as the dead were being buried.

Some survivors of the massacre also report that they were shot by a second gunman inside the mosque and claim that this was a planned attack of which the Israeli military was aware in advance. None here believes the official story of Goldstein acting entirely alone in a fit of madness.

The Israelis ordered 520 businesses to close overnight, and they remain shuttered to this day. Shuhaha Street, the main road through town, was later sealed off.

Goldstein was a supporter of the extremist rabbi Meir Kahane, an Orthodox Jewish American known for his ultra-nationalist ideology and for founding the Kach party in 1971. Kach advocated the forcible removal of Palestinians from Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt).

For Palestinians, the massacre was indicative of the danger posed by Israel’s illegal settlement project. Daily life for Palestinians in Hebron, particularly in the Old City, has since become unbearable, with Al-Shuhada street remaining closed and settler violence against Palestinians a regular occurrence.

Israeli Soldiers Injure Many Palestinians, Including A Journalist, In Hebron

On Friday, Israeli soldiers attacked a procession commemorating the 28th anniversary of the Ibrahimi Mosque massacre in the southern West Bank city of Hebron, wounding dozens of Palestinians, including a photojournalist.

Media sources said the Palestinians marched towards the Ibrahimi Mosque while chanting against the continued and escalated Israeli crimes and violations against the Palestinian people.

The Palestinians commemorated the massacre against the worshipers in the Ibrahimi Mosque before the soldiers started firing gas bombs, concussion grenades, and rubber-coated steel bullets at them.

Medical sources said dozens of Palestinians suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation, adding that the soldiers assaulted Palestine TV photojournalist Eyad Al-Hashlamoun, causing various cuts and bruises.

Early in the morning of February 25, 1994, Israeli-American colonizer Baruch Goldstein, wearing his army uniform and carrying his army-issued assault rifle, walked past Israeli soldiers at a checkpoint and into the Ibrahimi Mosque.

It was the holy month of Ramadan for Muslims, and 400 or 500 Palestinian men were worshipping. According to reports, Goldstein observed the scene once inside and waited until those present turned towards Mecca and knelt to pray before opening fire.

Twenty-nine Palestinians were killed and some 150 wounded before Goldstein’s victims subdued and beat him to death. According to a report in The New York Times, at least one Palestinian was shot and killed by Israeli soldiers stationed outside the mosque as panicked survivors attempted to flee to safety, and others may have died as a result of being repeatedly stopped en route to the hospital by soldiers wanting to search the vehicles they were being transported in.

Israeli soldiers attacked Friday, the weekly procession in Kufur Qaddoum, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqilia, shot three Palestinian and caused many to suffer the effects of tear gas inhalation, in addition to abducting one.

The Palestinians marched from the center of the village while chanting against the Israeli occupation and its escalating violations before the soldiers attacked them with live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, and gas bombs.

Morad Eshteiwi, the media coordinator of the Popular Committee against the Annexation Wall and Colonies in Kufur Qaddoum, said the soldiers shot three Palestinians with rubber-coated steel bullets and caused dozens to suffer the effects of tear gas inhalation.

Eshteiwi added that the soldiers also chased many Palestinians and ambushed a young man, Mohammad Nidal Aqel, 25, near an under-construction home, before assaulting and abducting him.

Kufur Qaddoum is subject to constant Israeli invasions and violations due to ongoing protests against ongoing military escalation, the illegal colonialist policies, and the illegal annexation of the Palestinian lands.

In 2003, the Israeli occupation authorities closed the town’s main road to local Palestinians and granted full access to the illegal colonial settlers, especially those living in the Kedumim colony built on stolen Palestinian lands.
