QNN: ‘Israel’ Committed 46 Violations Against Palestinian Journalists in January

Occupied Palestine, February 19, 2022 (QNN) – 46 Israeli violations were recorded against Palestinian media and journalists in January 2022.

The Journalists’ Support Committee, a journalists’ rights group documenting media violations across the occupied Palestinian territories, said the Israeli violations varied between “arrest, extortion and direct field assault” of media personnel among other forms of harassment.

According to the group, 4 Palestinian journalists were arrested by Israeli forces in January.

It noted that the Israeli army and settlers committed “17 cases of assault and injury against journalists” during their coverage of the demolition of Palestinian homes in the occupied East Jerusalem’s Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood and peaceful anti-occupation protests in the occupied West Bank.

The Israeli forces often used rubber-coated metal bullets and tear gas canisters against Palestinian journalists, the group said.

The group also documented 18 cases of journalists being blocked from covering Israeli violations against the Palestinians.

According to the group, Israeli forces raided the house of one journalist, threatened 2 female journalists, while restricting the social media accounts of 4 others for “violating publishing instructions.”

In January, the journalists’ rights group said that 17 Palestinian journalists and media workers were held in Israeli prisos.

‘Israel’ violently represses journalists documenting its crimes against Palestinians – chiefly targeting Palestinian reporters but not exclusively – because narrative control is a crucial component of political control.

Between the year 2000 and September 2018, ‘Israel’ killed 43 journalists in the West Bank and Gaza according to the Palestinian Center for Development and Media Freedom, MADA.

Israeli Soldiers Attack Many Palestinians In Sheikh Jarrah

Israeli soldiers attacked, on Saturday night, many Palestinians in Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood in the occupied capital, Jerusalem, and forced them to leave while allowing fanatic Israeli colonizers to march and call for expelling them.

The Wadi Hilweh Information Center In Silwan (Silwanic) said the soldiers assaulted the Palestinians with batons and dragged many of them in addition to firing gas bombs.

Silwanic added that the army continued the strict siege on Sheikh Jarrah to prevent the Palestinians and solidarity activists from reaching it.

It is worth mentioning that dozens of families in the neighborhood face displacement from their homes for Israel’s illegal colonialist activities and are constantly subject to attack and serious violations by the soldiers and the colonizers.

Sheikh Jarrah remains the target of dangerously escalating Israeli policies aiming at demolishing homes and removing at least 75 Palestinian families from their homes in the neighborhood to replace them with illegal colonialist settlers.

Israeli Colonizers Cut And Uproot Olive Trees, Attack Shepherds, In Salfit

On Saturday night, illegal Israeli colonizers invaded olive orchards in Yasuf village, east of the central West Bank city of Salfit, before cutting and uprooting several olive trees and attacking shepherds in Qarawat Bani Hassan town, west of Salfit.

Saleh Yassin, the head of Yasuf Village Council, said the colonizers cut and uprooted at least fifteen olive trees owned by a local farmer, identified as Ziad Jamil Abdul-Razeq.

In addition, the colonizers assaulted many Palestinian shepherds in the Nweitef Spring area, north of Qarawat Bani Hassan, before Israeli soldiers fired many gas bombs at the shepherds who tried to defend themselves.

The colonizers came from the illegal Havat Yair outpost, built on stolen Palestinian lands north of Qarawat Bani Hassan.

It is worth mentioning that the Nweitef Spring area is subject to constant violations, especially since the colonizers are trying to illegally annex it to expand Havat Ya’ir and control the water spring.

WAFA: “Palestinian Administrative Detainees Continue Boycott Of Israeli Military Courts For Two Months”

RAMALLAH, Sunday, February 20, 2022 (WAFA) – At least 450 Palestinian detainees have been refusing to show up for their military court hearings since the beginning of the year, in protest of their unfair detention without charge or trial under Israel’s controversial administrative detention policy.

The boycott includes hearings for the renewal of administrative detention orders as well as appeal hearings and later sessions at Israel’s Supreme Court.

Palestinian detainees say their action is a continuation of longstanding Palestinian efforts “to put an end to the unjust administrative detention practiced against our people by the occupation forces.”

They say Israel’s use of administrative detention has expanded in recent years and many women, children, and elderly people have been incarcerated under the thorny policy.

Under administrative detention, Israel keeps Palestinians without charge for up to six months, a period that can be extended an infinite number of times. Women and minors are also among those detainees. The detention takes place on orders from a military commander and on the basis of what the Israeli regime describes as ‘secret’ evidence. Some prisoners have been held in administrative detention for up to 11 years.

Palestinians and human rights groups say the administrative detention violates the right to due process since the evidence is withheld from prisoners while they are held for lengthy periods without being charged, tried, or convicted.

Palestinian detainees have continuously resorted to open-ended hunger strikes to express their outrage at the detention. They have also been subjected to systematic torture, harassment, and repression all through the years of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories.

More than 4,500 Palestinian prisoners are currently held in about 17 Israeli jails. Over 450 detainees, including women and minors, are under administrative detention. Rights groups describe Israel’s use of detention as a “bankrupt tactic” and have long called on Israel to end its use.
