Euro-Med condemns massive attacks by settlers in the West Bank

Days of Palestine – Jerusalem – The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor strongly condemned the widespread violence and attacks carried out by Israeli settlers against Palestinian citizens and their property in the West Bank under the protection of the Israeli occupation army.

The Euro-Med Monitor said in a statement on Friday that the violence, which has escalated sharply in the past days, takes the nature of revenge and collective punishment, amid the occupation army’s protection of the perpetrators of violence after the killing of a settler and the wounding of two others, on the evening of Thursday, December 16, 2021, near the entrance to the settlement of Homesh, which has been evacuated since 2005.

The Euro-Med Monitor indicated that it has monitored 38 attacks carried out by settlers since the date of the aforementioned operation, most of which were carried out under direct protection from the occupation.

He added that the most recent of these attacks took place this morning, Friday, December 24, when a settler deliberately ran over a Palestinian woman, “Ghadir Anis Masalmeh” (55 years), at the entrance to the town of Sinjel, north of Ramallah, killing her before the attacker escaped.

This attack came after the West Bank witnessed acts of violence against Palestinian residents of villages on Thursday evening, December 23, after settlers stormed their residential neighborhoods.

According to the Euro-Mediterranean Monitor, Israeli settlers carried out no less than 7 violent attacks last night, during which they destroyed tombstones in the village of Burqa, northwest of Nablus, a village that has been repeatedly attacked in recent days.

Many villages and neighborhoods in the northern valleys of Tubas governorate witnessed incursions by settlers who carried out acts of violence, throwing stones, and assaulting citizens and their property.

The same scene was repeated on the outskirts of the town of Silat Al Dhaher, south of Jenin, and the entrance to the village of Burqa, northwest of Nablus, where three houses and a car washroom were attacked at the entrance to the village.

The settlers’ attacks included uprooting trees, vandalizing crops, and attacking homes in the southern West Bank.

The Euro-Med Monitor stressed that the most dangerous thing in what is happening is the relocation of settlers in the evacuated settlement of “Homish”, north of Nablus, where the settlers, under the protection of the occupation army, returned the caravans to it in an official inauguration at the expense of the Palestinian land.

They warned that the violence practiced by the settlers comes in parallel with the violence pursued by the occupation forces, apparently to pressure the Palestinians in villages and towns near the points of contact with the settlements to leave and neglect them.

The Euro-Med Monitor stressed that the official Israeli response to settler violence clearly reflects the apartheid regime in “Israel”.

They continued that not only are the attacks carried out by settlers ignored, they are also protected during their implementation, at a time when the Israeli authorities are prosecuting Palestinians and bringing them to trial if they respond to direct attacks, which often consist in breaking into homes and destroying property.

It is mentioned that settlement in itself is a war crime according to the 1998 Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, and the presence of settlers in the Palestinian territories violates the basic principles of international humanitarian law.

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibilities to compel Israel to shoulder its responsibilities under international law, to end all manifestations of settlement, put an end to settler attacks, and bring those involved in attacks to fair trials.

The Euro-Med Monitor called on the Israeli occupation authorities to limit the encouragement of settler attacks by providing them with protection during their implementation, noting that the Israeli government bears the responsibility for the violence carried out by settlers, calling on it to put an end to double standards in dealing with events in the Palestinian territories.
