Israeli Navy Attacks Palestinian Fishing Boats in Gaza

Israeli navy ships opened fire, on Monday morning, at several Palestinian fishing boats in Gaza territorial waters in the northern and southern parts of the besieged coastal region.

Media sources said the navy ships fired several live rounds at the fishing boats, in the allotted fishing zones, in Khan Younis and Rafah, in the southern part of the coastal region.

They added that the attacks did not lead to casualties or damage, but forced the fishermen back to the shore without being able to fish to provide for their families, in fear of further violations and escalation.

The army frequently attacks farmersshepherds, workers, and fishermen across the eastern parts of the coastal region and in Palestinian territorial waters, leading to dozens of casualties,  including fatalities, in addition to preventing the Palestinians from tending to their lands and from fishing to provide for their families.

In March of this year, the Palestinian Interior Ministry in Gaza said Israeli mines were responsible for an explosion that led to the death of three fishermen.

Israeli military activates decision deeming six Palestinian human rights NGOs terrorist

A still from surveillance footage taken on the morning of July 29, 2021 inside the Defense for Children International – Palestine office in Ramallah. The still shows Israeli soldiers shortly after they broke down the door and began confiscating computers, laptops, and files

West Bank (QNN)- The Israeli army on Sunday issued an order declaring the six Palestinian human rights organizations as illegal in the West Bank. The declaration makes it possible for the Israeli army to close the organizations’ offices and subject their staff to criminal sanctions and administrative detention.

The decision also makes it possible for the Israeli occupying army to confiscate properties belonging to the six NGOs.

The occupation state had designated Palestinian human rights organizations as “terrorist organizations” two weeks ago.

The six organizations are the Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights, Al-Haq, the Bisan Center for Research and Development, Defense for Children Palestine, Union of Agricultural Work Committees (UAWC), and the Union of Palestinian Women’s Committees.

Devices of Palestinian human rights activists hacked by Israeli NSO spyware

Occupied Palestine (QNN)- Spyware from the Israeli surveillance company NSO Group was detected on the mobile phones of six Palestinian human rights activists, in the first known instance of Palestinian activists being targeted by the military-grade Pegasus spyware.

The human rights non-governmental organization (NGO) Front Line Defenders (FLD) shared the data they collected with the Citizen Lab and Amnesty International’s Security Lab for separate independent peer review of their initial findings. FLD’s analysis indicated that six devices belonging to six Palestinian human rights defenders were hacked with Pegasus.

The use of Pegasus spyware against journalists, rights activists and political dissidents from Mexico to Saudi Arabia has been documented since 2015.

The spyware gives intruders access to everything a person stores and does on their phone, including real-time communications. It even turns the infected device into a spying device by using its mic.

It is not clear who placed the NSO spyware. Three of the hacked Palestinians work for civil society groups. The others do not, and wish to remain anonymous, Frontline Defenders says.

Among those hacked is Ubai Aboudi, a 37-year-old economist and US citizen who runs the Bisan Center for Research and Development in Ramallah, in the occupied West Bank. The group is one of the six slapped with terrorist designations by Israel last month. Also, researcher Ghassan Halaika, of the Al-Haq rights group.

Also, among those targeted, Salah Al Hammouri, a Palestinian-French Lawyer and human rights defender, who has been recently revoked his permanent residency status in Jerusalem based on a “breach of allegiance to the State of Israel.”

The administration of US President Joe Biden last week blacklisted the NSO Group and a lesser-known Israeli competitor, Candiru, for developing and supplying spyware to foreign governments “that used these tools to maliciously”.

‘Israel’ surveils West Bank Palestinians in massive facial recognition program, Washington Post reports

Occupied West Bank (QNN)- Israeli forces have been carrying a campaign to extensively take photos of Palestinians in the West Bank for a facial recognition database that is being used to monitor Palestinians.

A new investigative report by the Washington Post published on Monday, revealed that over the last two years, Israeli soldiers began to use a facial recognition smartphone technology called Blue Wolf to take pictures of Palestinians’ faces and cross-reference them against a database of other photos. The app then alerts the soldier whether individuals should be detained based on prior information about them.

In order to create a database, Israeli soldiers took photos of Palestinians and competed with one another over the number of pictures that they took. It is thought that the database contains thousands of photos, the Post stated.

The Post’s report depended on testimonies by Israeli soldiers and information by Breaking the Silence, an organization of Israeli army veterans that exposes army abuses committed in the occupied territories.

The report added that Israeli forces had installed facial recognition cameras in military checkpoints in occupied Hebron. The cameras are part of a broader network of closed-circuit television cameras known as Hebron Smart City, which according to an ex-soldier, also tracks Palestinians in their homes.

The surveillance network also includes White Wolf, an app that had been previously disclosed and that is used by security officials in West Bank settlements to provide identification information about Palestinians before they enter settlements to work.
