The fresh incursion came despite a May 21 cease-fire between Israel and Palestinian resistance factions.

The Egypt-brokered, open-ended cease-fire ending a round of fighting that lasted 11 days of Israeli military onslaught on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive, which began on May 10, left 232 Palestinians – the vast majority of them civilians – dead and more than 1900 injured.
