Palestinians in the Gaza Strip have started harvesting their date palms
According to the Ministry of Agriculture some 12,440 dunums (12.44 square kilometres) of land are ready for harvest and will produce 14,000 tonnes of dates.
On average, individuals eat six kilogrammes of the valuable crop a year, the minister added.
Once harvested the fruits will be sent to the occupied West Bank.
The success of the date palms comes at a time when Palestinians in the besieged Strip have suffered following 11-days of Israeli bombardment, the occupation forces’ continued use of herbicides and pesticides to kill their crops, and a lack of clean water and petrol to work the necessary machines.
