A member of the Islamic Jihad political bureau, Sheikh Nafez Azzam, said the movement will focus during the upcoming Palestinian factions’ meeting in Cairo on reviving the Palestinian national project and reforming the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO).

“What concerns us in the upcoming Cairo meeting and what we must intensify efforts for is reviving the Palestinian national project and reforming the PLO so that it becomes an umbrella organisation representing all the people in line with their hopes and aspirations,” Azzam told Quds Press news site.

“This is one of the most important priorities for us during the Cairo meeting in parallel with working to reach a comprehensive national vision that protects the Palestinian people’s rights and defends their constants,” he added.

On Tuesday, Egypt called on the Palestinian factions to meet in Cairo next week in order to agree on a unified vision for a national action as well as steps to end the division. However, Cairo has not extended official invitations to the factions to meet yet.

Egypt’s Al-Ahram newspaper reported earlier that “the general secretaries of the Palestinian factions had been invited to meet next week in Cairo under the auspices of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and his Palestinian counterpart Mahmoud Abbas.”

According to the newspaper, the meeting will discuss “agreeing on the necessary steps to end the division and uniting the Palestinian ranks, and setting a roadmap for the next stage.”

Members of the Union of Arab Employees gather for a demonstration outside the headquarters of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in Gaza City on 31 May 2021 to demand the expulsion of its Gaza director of operations, Matthias Shmale, over his remarks on the recent conflict between Israel and the Gaza-based Islamist Hamas movement

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) on Wednesday summoned the director of its operations in the Gaza Strip, Matthias Schmale, over statements describing Israel’s missile strikes on Gaza as “precise”.

On Sunday, Schmale told Israel’s Channel 12 that the Israeli military’s strikes on Gaza appeared to be carried out with “sophistication” and “precision”.

“I have the impression there is a huge sophistication in the way the Israeli military struck over the 11 days,” Schmale said, adding: “Yes they didn’t hit, with some exceptions, civilian targets, but the viciousness, the ferocity of those strikes were heavily felt.”

“More than 60 children were killed, 19 of whom went to UNRWA schools. So I think the precision was there but there was unacceptable and unbearable loss of life on the civilian side,” he added.

The remarks were heavily criticised by Palestinian civil society organisations who described them as “misleading and dangerous”.

Meanwhile, the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas described Schmale’s comments as having “provided justification for the Israeli aggression” on Gaza.

A spokesman for UNRWA in Jerusalem, Sami Mshasha, told Anadolu that Schmale and his deputy had been “called in for consultation and discussion at the Jerusalem headquarters over the latest developments in Gaza”, adding that Deputy Commissioner-General Leni Stenseth would temporarily lead the Gaza team.

Schmale has apologised for his remarks saying “recent remarks I made on Israeli TV have offended & hurt those who had family members & friends killed & injured during the war that has just ended. I truly regret to have caused them pain.”

Israeli police said yesterday that they had arrested 2,142 Palestinian citizens of Israel filing indictments against 285 of them following protests against Israeli attacks in Jerusalem and the aggression on the besieged Gaza Strip, Anadolu reported.

In a statement the police said 614 people were “still behind bars”, while the rest had been released.

Illegal weapons were seized during search and arrest campaigns, they added.

Palestinian citizens of Israel, often called Arab Israelis, constitute about 20 per cent of the number of the country’s population.

On 24 May, the Legal centre for Arab minority rights in Israel, Adalah, said that the Israeli police campaign of arrests was “a war by military police which take place at night and which requires a response from all political forces, parties and the Follow-up Committee alike.”

“This is a war of arrests against demonstrators, political activists and minors, which includes large forces raiding the homes of parents and families to intimidate them, and aims to take revenge on Palestinian citizens for their recent political and patriotic stances,” it added

145 Democrats urge the release of $75m in US aid to Gaza

Some 145 Democratic members of Congress are urging a key Republican senator to release the hold on $75 million in Palestinian aid.

The lawmakers, led by Congressman Jamie Raskin, wrote to Senator James Risch “to respectfully request that you release your hold on tens of millions of dollars in appropriated humanitarian aid that is so desperately needed to meet the needs of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian civilians rebuilding their lives in the wake of the fighting between Hamas and Israel earlier this month.”

“Gaza is experiencing a humanitarian catastrophe. Buildings lie in rubble. Access to clean water and electricity is sporadic or nonexistent. Food insecurity is spreading. COVID-19 is running rampant and thousands of people have been displaced and rendered homeless. The magnitude of the crisis is staggering,” they wrote.

Senator Risch is reportedly behind a hold on the $75 million in congressionally approved aid President Joe Biden wants to send to NGOs administering humanitarian assistance in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

The request comes after Israel’s latest round of air strikes on the Gaza Strip last month.

At least 255 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and 39 women, and more than 1,900 others injured in 11 days of Israeli air strikes on the besieged enclave.

They added that the assistance would be provided in full accordance with US law and administered and overseen by the US government and by vetted partners on the ground.

Signatories to the letter include by Democrat lawmaker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other progressive representatives including Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar.

“We are pleased to support Representative Raskin’s effort and appreciate each of the 145 members who signed the letter. Senator Risch should immediately release his hold on this aid,” said Hadar Susskind, president and CEO of Americans for Peace Now.

Israeli security members clash with Palestinian demonstrators commemorating land day and protesting settler visits to archaeological and historical sites in the Palestinian village of Sebastia, northwest of Nablus in the occupied West Bank, on 30 March 2021

Israeli forces yesterday sealed off a Palestinian archaeological site in Nablus’ town of Sebastia.

Sebastia’s Mayor, Mohammad Azem, told Wafa news agency that a “sizable Israeli military force has raided the town, proceeded with the site closure, and prevented Palestinians from accessing it, to ensure protection of dozens of settlers who forced their way into the site.”

Azem pointed out that the illegal settlers had recently announced a “programme to storm the town in the coming days,” adding that they were attempting to impose a “fait accompli to realise their settlement ambitions in the area.”

Sebastia is a small historic town located on a hill 11 kilometres to the northwest of Nablus, 3,000 Palestinians inhabit the area. The area has been identified as the capital of the northern kingdom during the Iron Age II in Palestine and a major urban centre during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, according to UNESCO.

Attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians are common, particularly by extreme right-wingers. They are rarely held to account by the occupation authorities. Indeed, in most cases, the settlers who harass and attack Palestinians are accompanied and protected by Israeli soldiers.

Israeli settlers have recently intensified their presence at the Palestinian archeological site as the army closes the area to Palestinian residents.

Soldiers Injure Ten Palestinians, One Seriously, In Nablus

Israeli soldiers shot, Friday, ten Palestinians with live fire, including one who suffered life-threatening wounds, after the army attacked a procession on Palestinian lands in Abu Sbeih Mountain, in Beita town, south of the northern West Bank city of Nablus.

Ahmad Jibril, the head of the Ambulance and Emergency Department at the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) said the medics rushed ten Palestinians, who were shot with live fire, to a hospital in Nablus, including one who suffered profoundly serious wounds.

PRCS medics also provided treatment to several Palestinians who were shot with rubber-coated steel bullets, and those who suffered the effects of tear gas inhalation.

The Palestinians were nonviolently marching on their lands during a procession that was organized by local social and political organizations, in addition to popular nonviolent resistance committees, protesting the illegal Israeli colonialist takeover of Palestinian lands.

It is worth mentioning that the illegal Israeli colonists installed a new outpost, earlier on May of this year, on Palestinian lands in Abu Sbeih Mountain, leading to daily protests.

During these protests, the soldiers killed two Palestinians, identified as Dr. Issa Barham, 40, a District Attorney with the Palestinian Public Prosecution Department, who was fatally shot by the soldiers on Friday, May 14th, 2021, and Zakariya Hamayel, 28, who was shot and killed on Friday, May 28th, 2021.

Soldier Abduct A Palestinian Child In Jerusalem

Israeli soldiers abducted, Thursday, a Palestinian child from Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood, in the occupied capital Jerusalem, and moved her to an interrogation facility.

Eyewitnesses said the soldiers abducted Nofouth Hammad, 14, at the entrance of the neighborhood, before taking her for interrogation at a Police station in Salahuddin Street, in Jerusalem.

They added that the child was participating in recreational activity in the neighborhood and was drawing the Palestinian flags with washable paint on the cheeks of her friends when the soldiers abducted her.

The attack is part of the constant Israeli violations in Sheikh Jarrah, especially amidst the Israeli plans to displace and remove the indigenous Palestinians to replace them with illegal colonialist settlers.

28 Palestinian families are living in Sheikh Jarrah; they moved there when they were forced out of their homes and lands during the Nakba of 1948, when Israel was established in the historic land of Palestine, after ethnically cleansing hundreds of towns and villages.
