Israeli Army Assassinates Senior Fighter Of Al-Qassam Brigades In Gaza

The Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, issued a statement, Wednesday, confirming the death of one of its senior leaders, along with several other fighters, in an Israeli attack in Gaza.

The Brigades stated that the fighter Bassem Issa (Abu Emad), and several other fighters were killed when the Israeli army fired missiles at a site, run by Al-Qassam in Gaza.

The Brigades added that its fighters would never abandon their duties, and will remain steadfast, challenging the illegal Israeli occupation and its crimes against the civilians, their homes, holy sites, and lands.

The names of the other fighters have not been released at the time of this report. The attack also led to several injuries, and serious property damage to the site, and many homes.

It is worth mentioning that the soldiers killed, Wednesday, at least twenty Palestinians during ongoing bombardment and shelling targeting all parts of the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip.

In a recent Israeli strike on Gaza, on Wednesday at night, the army killed two children, identified as Mariam Mohammad Odah at-Tilbani, 3, and her brother Zeid, 5, in their home in Tal al-Hawa neighborhood, in Gaza city.

The number of Palestinians, killed by Israeli missiles and shells in the last two days since Israel began its offensive on Gaza, is more than 66, including sixteen children and five women, in addition to the injury of at least 365 Palestinians.

EuroMed: Israel collectively punishes the population in Gaza by targeting homes and civilians

Israel’s escalation of violence and widespread bombardment, including civilian objects without respecting the principle of proportionality, in the Gaza Strip is utterly appalling, Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said today in a statement.

Since the Israeli Army launched its military operation “Guardian of the Walls”, fears have significantly risen regarding Israel’s intent to not only continue their attacks but to further escalate and expand its target range, according to the recommendations of the Israeli Chief of the General Staff, General Aviv Kochavi.

Israeli warplanes have been bombing dozens of sites in the Gaza Strip since Monday evening after Palestinian armed factions fired several rockets at Israel and the occupied territories. This came as a response to the Israeli forces’ attacks on Palestinians in Jerusalem, especially those praying in the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood.

However, the Israeli forces expanded their response to include targeting dozens of civilian objects, women and children and bombing densely populated gatherings, which according to the Rome Statute, is a war crime.

Israel has been targeting civilian objects in the Gaza Strip in a manner that exceeds military necessities. In one of the targeted houses, an elderly woman Amira Abdel Fattah Subuh, 58, was killed. Her son, Abd al-Rahman Yusef Subuh, 19, a disabled young man who suffers from cerebral palsy since birth, was also killed.

Later, the Israeli army announced that it had targeted the home of a battalion commander. But field investigations confirm that no one was in the targeted flat during the bombing. The bombing caused the ceiling of the lower apartment to fall, which killed the two citizens and wounded some others.

This incident is an example of Israel’s bombing policy that does not consider the principle of proportionality. Israel targets civilian objects deliberately to inflict damage upon victims and leave them with material losses as a form of revenge and collective punishment, prohibited by the rules of international humanitarian law.

Israel might return to this policy of deliberately targeting civilian homes, which has happened in previous attacks, where hundreds of homes were destroyed, including entire residential towers, many of them targeted during the presence of the civilian population in them.

Israel expanded its bombardment range today and targeted economic facilities such as an ice cream factory in the east of Gaza and educational institutions such as the Al-Salah school in Deir Al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, up until the statement was published, the airstrikes had killed 26 Palestinians, including nine children, and injured 122 others.

This attack requires urgent action from the international community to bind Israel to the rules of international humanitarian law. At the same time, the International Criminal Court should include these violations in its investigation of possible crimes in the Palestinian territories.

Article 25 of the Hague Regulations concerning the Laws and Customs of War on Land says: “The attack or bombardment, by whatever means, of towns, villages, dwellings, or buildings which are undefended is prohibited. Article 53 of the Fourth Geneva Convention stipulates that “Any destruction by the Occupying Power of real or personal property […] is prohibited, except where such destruction is rendered absolutely necessary by military operations”.

Destruction of property for no clear military justifications is a grave breach of Article 147 of the Fourth Geneva Convention and a war crime under the Statute of the International Criminal Court Article 8 (2) (b) (2).

Anas Aljarjawi, Euro-Med Monitor’s Chief Operations Officer, said that “even if there was a military necessity, it is the responsibility of the occupying power to comply with the other provisions stipulated by international humanitarian law”.

“International humanitarian law provides for the prohibition of property damage as a ‘preventive measure’ – that is, in cases where the danger has not yet been verified. It also prohibits the destruction of property in order to achieve deterrence, spread terror among civilians, or take revenge”.

“Israel’s targeted demolition of civilian homes is merely a form of collective punishment for residents in the Gaza Strip. Itis a violation of international humanitarian law, especially Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, which states that “Collective penalties and likewise all measures of intimidation or terrorism is prohibited. Pillage is prohibited. Reprisals against protected persons and their property is prohibited’.”

Israeli Soldiers Kill A Palestinian Officer Near Nablus

Israeli soldiers killed, on Wednesday at night, a Palestinian security officer near the town of Tal, south of Nablus, in northern West Bank, after the army claimed he opened fire at the soldiers.

Palestinian sources have confirmed that the slain man, an officer with the Palestinian Intelligence Service, has been identified as Mohammad Omar Sa’id Najjar, 36, from the Ras al-Ein area in Nablus city.

According to the army, the Palestinian drove his car to a military roadblock and opened fire at the soldiers, wounding two, before they shot him.

The army closed the entire area after declaring it a closed military zone, and forced the Palestinians away, before an Israeli ambulance arrived at the scene, provided treatment to the wounded soldiers, and took them to a hospital.

Palestinian medics also rushed to the area, but the soldiers refused to allow them through to provide treatment to the Palestinian who apparently was still in a serious condition. The corpse of the slain officer remained with the army.

It is worth mentioning that the soldiers initiated extensive invasions into surrounding Palestinian areas.

In related news, the soldiers invaded, on Wednesday evening, the towns of Zeita, Nazlet Issa, and Baqa ash-Sharqiya, near the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem, and attacked Palestinian protesters, wounding five with live fire in their limbs.

Illegal Israeli colonialist settlers also fired live rounds at Palestinian shepherds in the Masafer Yatta area, south of the southern West Bank city of Hebron.

In the Gaza Strip, Israel continued its offensive and assassinated a senior leader of the Al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, identified as Bassem Issa, also leading to the death of other Palestinians.

The slain children Mariam and her brother Mohammad

On the same day, the soldiers fired missiles and shells targeting homes, residential towers, infrastructure, and various other facilities, killing at least twenty Palestinians in several parts of the besieged and impoverished Gaza Strip.

In a recent Israeli strike on Gaza, on Wednesday night, the army killed two children, identified as Mariam Mohammad Odah at-Tilbani, 3, and her brother Zeid, 5, in their home in Tal al-Hawa neighborhood, in Gaza city.

Armed Israeli Mobs Attack Palestinians In Israel

As the Israeli military continued pounding the Gaza Strip with missiles for the third straight day, groups of armed Israelis in different parts of Israel invaded Palestinian neighborhoods and villages and began attacking Palestinians and their property.

The Israeli mobs were allowed to carry out their assaults on Palestinians despite the fact that Palestinians had been banned from going to the street to protest the Israeli attack on their relatives and fellow Palestinians in Gaza.

The Israeli police had imposed a curfew in Palestinian towns inside Israel Wednesday night, but did not enforce the curfew against the roaming bands of armed Israelis.

A Palestinian man was brutally beaten by an Israeli mob in Haifa:

Palestinians were successful in preventing Israelis from setting fire to mosques in both cities, confronting them and chasing them away from the mosques.

Israeli police arrested more than 17 Palestinians in Lod and other Arab cities during the protests prior to the curfew being imposed. They did not arrest any of the armed Israelis that attacked Palestinian civilians.

In Lod, in addition to trying to set fire to the central Mosque in the town, the mob also set fire to a car owned by a Palestinian citizen of Israel.

A human rights activist from the town, Majd Kayyal, said that the situation in occupied Lod and Yaffa is terrifying. Israeli forces, according to Kayyal, are accompanying the paramilitary settlers and allowing them to carry out their attacks with impunity.

“The situation is really terrifying and a recipe for a massacre.”, Kayyal said.

The roaming bands of armed Israelis follow the shooting death of a young Palestinian citizen of Israel a day earlier. The young man had been participating in a protest against the Israeli bombing of Gaza when an armed paramilitary settler began opening fire at the demonstrators, killing him and severely wounding another.

The Mayor of Lod, Yair Revivo, called the situation in his town a “civil war between Arabs and Jews.”

The declaration of a state of emergency in Lod, which was declared at dawn Wednesday, marks the first time since 1966 that a state of emergency was declared in the town. It used to be a majority Palestinian city, but as Israeli settlements have continued to encroach, the town is now less than 50% Palestinian.

Tabib was set to be released from the Israeli army next month, after serving his three year term. All Israelis are required to serve three years in the military when they turn 18. Most of the soldiers spend their service as part of the military occupation of the Palestinian Territories.

The Palestinian Territories: the West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights, have been under Israeli martial law since 1967. All aspects of the lives of Palestinians living in these Territories are subject to the jurisdiction of the Israeli military.

On Thursday morning, hundreds of mourners attended Tabib’s funeral in the military cemetery in his hometown of Elyakim.

He is the sixth Israeli to be killed by the Palestinian resistance during the current escalation that began Monday May 10th. During the same time period, 69 Palestinians have been killed, 17 of them children, including toddlers and babies as young as 4 months old. Over 400 Palestinians have been wounded by Israeli forces, many of them seriously.
