Three More Palestinian Detainees Diagnosed with Coronavirus

The Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) has reported, Saturday, that three additional detainees, held by Israel, have been officially diagnosed with the coronavirus, raising the total number of infected detainees to 250.

The PPS said most of the infections took place in Gilboa’ Israeli prison, especially in November of 2020, and added that the infected detainees are also facing very dire living conditions in section 8 of Ramon prison in the rooms dedicated for isolating them but without actually providing them with the needed medical care.

It added that the section is already overcrowded, especially after Israel transferred infected detainees from the Negev Detention Camp and Ramon prison over the past few days.

The PPS stated that instead of collecting samples from the detainees who are showing symptoms, the Israeli Prison Authority forces them to wait, an issue that raises their anxiety and causes the virus to spread.

It said that Israel is using coronavirus as a new tool to inflict further punishment on the detainees and deny them basic rights.

The PPS also said that Israel controls the information about infections among the detainees, especially due to the absence of international monitoring of the prisons where the Palestinian political prisoners are held.

It called on all related parties, mainly the International Red Cross and the World Health Organization, to oblige Israel to provide the detainees with the required medical attention, especially the coronavirus vaccines, after Israel announced it would not be vaccinating the detainees.

The PPS also called for forming an international medical committee that would supervise the distribution and administration of the vaccine.

Israel Reportedly Agrees To Vaccinate Palestinian Political Prisoners

Israeli sources have reported, Sunday, that the Israeli Prison Authority will administer coronavirus vaccines to the Palestinian detainees starting sometime this week, after the Israeli Public Security Minister Amir Ohana withdrew his objection.

The sources stated that administering the vaccine to soldiers, jailors and staffers of the Israeli prisons and detention centers will conclude Sunday, and the next step would be to administer the vaccine to the detainees.

The Israeli Prison Authority stated that any Palestinian detainee who refuses to be vaccinated will have to sign official documents to voluntarily decline the inoculation.

It added that the inoculation would take place according to predefined priorities set by the Health Ministry, adding that all prisoners will have the option to be vaccinated.

It is worth mentioning that the number of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons who have been officially diagnosed with the coronavirus has arrived to 250.

On January 14th 2021, UN human rights experts called on Israel, the occupying power, to ensure swift and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for the Palestinian people under occupation, the United Nations Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner said.

“Israel’s roll-out of its vaccination programme against the COVID-19 pandemic for its citizens has been impressive. In this early stage of the worldwide inoculation programme, Israel has delivered the vaccines to a higher percentage of its citizens than any other country,” the experts said. “We understand that Palestinians with resident status in occupied East Jerusalem have been offered the vaccines by Israel” the office said.

“However, Israel has not ensured that Palestinians under occupation in the West Bank and Gaza will have any near-future access to the available vaccines. The COVID-19 pandemic has been ravaging the West Bank and Gaza in recent months, and has fractured an already badly under-resourced Palestinian health care system. We are particularly concerned about the deteriorating health situation in Gaza, which suffers from a 13-year-old blockade, serious water and electricity shortages, and endemic poverty and unemployment,” it added.

As the occupying power, Israel has a responsibility under international law, including article 56 of the Fourth Geneva Convention, to ensure “public health and hygiene in the occupied territory.”

It is worth mentioning that the Israeli Public Security Minister Amir Ohana initially objected to vaccinating the detainees, and said, “there should be no inoculating security prisoners without approval and in line with vaccination progress among the general population.”

Although Ohana’s statement did not single out Palestinian political prisoners held in Israeli prisons, the “security” prisoners held by Israel are Palestinian.

Austrian police attacks Palestinian family, putting infant in shock

The interrogators asked the father if his 8-month-old infant would be able to eat all kinds of meat in Austria when she grows up and if he will choose her husband or he will leave her to do that herself

Vienna (QNN)- A Palestinian man located in Austra said police attacked his family without any reason or charge, reading severe harm on his wife and infant.

The Palestinian citizen “K.A” told the Anadolu Agency that a police special force stored his house on November 9.

“We were awoken in the morning by a fuss”, he said. “In s few seconds, dozens of rifles were pointed at us. It was a special forces unit of 15 to 20 cops.”

“They were shouting: hands up! My 8-month-old baby was crying all the time”, he added.

“They left the door open. My wife and baby were very scared and crying. They said they will take me for interrogation.”

He said that the interrogators asked him questions like “do you pray? does your wife wear a hijab?”. They also asked if his 8-month-old infant would be able to eat all kinds of meat in Austria when she grows up and if he will choose her husband or he will leave her to do that herself.

The young father had shared on his Facebook account a photo of the Turkish flag and President, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, so, they asked him if he meets or calls him.

The interrogators also asked him about Egypt, although he is Palestinian. They asked him about Yassir Arafat, Sheikh Yusouf Qaradawi, as well as group that he “has never heard about before”.

The interrogation continued for 18 hours. He said that the interrogators pushed him to lie and say that some people belong to specific groups.

Moreover, they used his wife and daughter to pressure him. They said that he should admit charges that he did not commit in order to go back to his family. “If you do not tell us the truth, we will not allow you to go back to your family’, they said.

The wife told AA that the unit stayed at their house even after taking her husband. They forced her to stay still for a long time. She was even going to the bathroom with their weapons pointed at her.

After the attack, the Austrian police got him fired from his job. He used to work for a well-known firm in the country but the Austrian police sent a letter to his work reading that “this person cannot work in this place anymore”, which forced his employer to fire him.

The Austrian police froze his assets. Although they told him that he can draw down a sufficient amount of money, he found out that the bank prevented him from doing so.

The barbaric attack on the family put the 8-month-old infant in shock, according to the father. “She cannot breastfeed although she is still eight months old”, he said.

It also green-lights the expansion of the current US mission in the Arnona neighborhood.

The Jerusalem Municipal Building and Planning Committee has just approved the plans for the new #US Embassy which will be built on Derech Hebron in #Jerusalem. As well as the extension of the current temporary embassy in Arnona.

This step was fast-tracked in the final days of the administration of US President Donald Trump, who moved the US diplomatic mission to Jerusalem back in 2018, in an attempt to further create facts on the ground that would make it harder for the upcoming administration of Joe Biden to reverse the move.

Currently, there is no intention to move the embassy back to Tel Aviv.

President-elect Joe Biden pledged not to do so, even as he called President Donald Trump’s decision to move the diplomatic mission from Tel Aviv “short-sighted and frivolous.”
