The Journalist Support Committee (JSC) confirmed on Friday that there are currently 26 Palestinian journalists inside Israeli jails, Anadolu Agency reported.

In a statement reported by Anadolu Agency, the JSC, an NGO reporting on violations against Palestinian journalists, revealed that last week the Israel occupation forces arrested Palestinian journalist Laith Jaara from his house in Tulkarm.

Jaara, according to the JSC, was the last Palestinian journalist to be arrested by the Israeli occupation forces, noting that his detention brought the number of Palestinian journalists currently inside Israeli jails to 26.

The JSC condemned the continuous Israel detention campaigns against Palestinian journalists.

Head of the JSC Saleh Al-Masri conveyed:

Israeli occupation intentionally detains the Palestinian journalists and puts off their hearings in an attempt to block the reality they report to the world.

Al-Masri added: “The Israeli occupation continues the detention of Palestinian journalists in violation of all the international laws and conventions which guarantee protection for free speech and freedom of expression.”

He called for the international journalistic bodies: “To put pressure on the Israeli occupation in order to stop its systematic aggression against the Palestinian journalists.”

As of December, Palestinian official sources disclosed that there are about 4,400 Palestinian prisoners inside Israeli jails, including 700 patients.

The Palestinian Authority (PA) called on Friday for the United Nations (UN) Security Council to stop Israeli settler attacks against Palestinians, implementing Resolution 2334.

In a statement, the PA’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates conveyed that a spike in Israeli settler violence witnessed over the last week: “Not only aims at terrorising the defenceless Palestinian communities in the occupied West Bank, but also aims at more theft of Palestinian land for the benefit of the colonial Israeli settlements and outposts.”

The statement also announced: “Attacks by Israeli settlers against Palestinians and their public and private property were focused on the areas south, east and west of the city of Nablus, in the north of the West Bank.”

Meanwhile, the ministry confirmed that the Israeli settlers and settler organisations have been targeting this area: “Aimed to push forward achieving a greater settlement bloc that will prevent any possibility of creating a viable, geographically contiguous Palestinian state.”

It added: “Settler attacks fall within the framework of this objective, which aims to achieve and impose a gradual and effective annexation of all areas classified as Area C and finally ‘Israelise’ them.”

The ministry directly blamed the Israeli occupation government and the US administration of outgoing President Donald Trump, holding them responsible for the spike in Israeli settler violence, which would prevent any chance of achieving peace based on the two-state solution.

Israeli air attacks cause injuries, damage in Gaza Strip

At least two Palestinians were wounded in what Israel called a retaliatory attack on Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip

Deze afbeelding heeft een leeg alt-atribuut; de bestandsnaam is mdoNX.webp

The Israeli military has carried out air raids targeting Hamas positions in the besieged Gaza Strip, injuring two people and causing damage, Palestinian media reported.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Israeli warplanes fired a series of missiles on Saturday in the eastern, northwestern and central parts of the Gaza Strip, including open farmland, wounding a six-year-old girl and a man in his 20s.

The attacks caused power cuts in the eastern parts and caused some damage to a children’s hospital, a centre for disabled people, and shattered the windows of some residential buildings, according to the reports.

However, Israeli army spokesman Avichay Adraee said on Twitter that the raids hit a rocket manufacturing site and a military post belonging to Hamas – the group that governs the Gaza Strip – adding that the attack had been carried out in response to rocket fire from Gaza.

According to the army, a rocket was fired at Israel from the Gaza Strip on Friday night, shortly after warning sirens sounded in the southern Israeli city of Ashkelon.

Israeli media said the projectile was intercepted by the army’s Iron Dome anti-missile air defence system.

No Palestinian group in Gaza has claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, which broke months of relative calm, but Israel holds Hamas responsible for all attacks emanating from Gaza, including those claimed by other fighter groups based in the enclave.

The impoverished and densely populated Gaza Strip has been under a crippling Israeli blockade since 2007, after Hamas took over the coastal enclave.

Hamas and Israel reached an agreement at the end of September to cease hostilities, although attacks continued.

The ceasefire followed a deadly surge in violence and was to see Israel allow new development projects, including an industrial zone and a hospital.

Hamas has accused Israel of not fully complying with the deal.

Israel, which deems Hamas a “terrorist” organisation, shuns direct negotiations and has never publicly acknowledged the truce.

Israel has launched three offensives against the Gaza Strip since 2008, and there have been numerous flare-ups.

Britain should end, not extend, its military cooperation with Israel

Israel has interfered in the British electoral process for years. Israel’s covert activities reached their apex a year ago when Jeremy Corbyn, after a distortion campaign, was prevented from becoming prime minister

By Asa Winstanley

Following the news about signing secret military cooperation with Israel, British people were asked to rise up against their government’s increasing military cooperation with the occupation state of Israel due to its dirty plans and intentions.

Earlier this month, Israeli and British military officials signed a joint agreement to formalise and increase their “defence relationship”. The full terms of the pact are secret, but it seems that it will involve joint training exercises and other forms of military cooperation.

The agreement came only one month after senior Israeli officers met with their French counterparts to discuss similar arrangements. As my colleague at The Electronic Intifada, David Cronin, pointed out, there is more than a century of precedents for such British and French meddling in Palestine.

In 1916, for example, the two imperialist powers signed a secret document known as the Sykes-Picot Agreement. Between them, they divided up swathes of the Arab world into British and French “spheres of influence”.

As a classic imperialist carve-up, Sykes-Picot received the assent of Tsarist Russia. However, when the Bolsheviks came to power in the 1917 Revolution, Lenin and his comrades published and exposed the agreement, which was deeply embarrassing for the British.

Cronin notes that Sykes-Picot “was followed the next year by pledges of support from Paris and London to support Zionist colonisation in Palestine. France was first to do so, although Britain’s pledge – the Balfour Declaration – had greater consequences.”

Britain agreed in 1917 – in Balfour’s infamous letter – to essentially hand Palestine over to the European Zionist movement for its colonisation project. The indigenous Palestinian Arabs were not consulted.

Throughout 1917 and 1918, the British fought a war in Palestine against the Ottoman Empire. This ended with the latter’s defeat and Britain’s military occupation of Palestine.

Today, direct French and British imperialism is no more. We are now in the era of neo-colonialism.

Despite the decline of the British Empire, the UK still has a military presence across the globe. Journalist Phil Miller revealed for Declassified UK recently that Britain has 145 military bases in 42 countries around the world. America’s overwhelming military superiority makes it the sole global empire today, with hundreds of military bases. As key US allies, France and Britain bow down to the global hegemon.

The Middle East remains an important area of the globe in geo-political terms, according to the calculations of imperial planners in Washington, London and Paris. Israel has long sold itself as a useful tool of Euro-American control in the region; a “little loyal Jewish Ulster in a sea of potentially hostile Arabism” in the words of Britain’s first military governor of Palestine. It is a key tactic of imperialist control in the modern era to use such regional clients.

There’s no doubt that – from the perspective or the brutal realpolitik that regrettably holds sway among political and military elites in the West – Israel performs useful services in this regard. This is because the “national interests” of these countries are defined so narrowly that they do not mean the actual interests of the nation as a whole – of the people – but those of private corporations, of capital and of the managerial elites of state power.

A recent example of Israeli services to British elite interests was the announcement a few months ago that British police had tested an Elbit drone off the Welsh coastline. The announcement made it clear that the police intend to use the military drone for surveillance of the British populace. Elbit is Israel’s largest private arms maker. The same Hermes 900 drone that was tested in Wales has also been used to murder Palestinian civilians in the Gaza Strip indiscriminately for years.

Nevertheless, in my view, such ties are more about Israel forging political rather than military links with its Western allies. After all, there is nothing particularly unique about the Hermes 900 or Elbit’s other products that Britain needs to use them above the products of all other weapons manufacturers in the world.

Moreover, Israel has not been above attacking and spying on its Western “allies”, as in the case of the Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard. A US naval intelligence analyst, Pollard spent almost three decades in a US jail after stealing military secrets and selling them on to Israel.

The Obama administration freed Pollard in 2015. Restrictions preventing him from leaving the US recently came to an end, and reports suggest that he and his wife could move to Israel soon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called Pollard on the phone last month and asked him to move there.

In Britain, Israel has interfered in the British electoral process for years. These covert activities reached their apex a year ago when Jeremy Corbyn – after a five-year sabotage campaign under the mask of “combatting anti-Semitism” – was effectively prevented from winning the General Election and entering 10 Downing Street. As far as the ruling Conservative Party and Britain’s deep state elite were concerned, that was another useful service performed by “the little loyal Jewish Ulster”.

The British people should take note. And then let their government know that it should end, not extend, its military cooperation with Israel.

Child, teen injured, hospital, handicapped center damaged in Israeli strikes on Gaza

Tens of children, who were in the hospital beds, were traumatised when the shrapnel of Israeli missiles hit windows and damaged walls and cut electricity in hospital

Six-year-old girl and teenager were injured, hospital for children, center for handicapped, stadium, mosque and several homes were damaged in pre-dawn Israeli airstrikes and artillery attacks on besieged Gaza Strip.

Israeli warplanes fired five missiles at locations east of Al-Tuffah neighborhood of Gaza City, injuring the child and teenager from shrapnel of Israeli missiles.

The two wounded were rushed to Al-Shifa Hospital, the main and largest medical centre in the Gaza Strip, where electricity was blacked out due to the Israeli attacks.

At the same time, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that tens of children, who were in the hospital beds, were traumatised when the shrapnel of Israeli missiles hit windows and damaged walls and cut electricity in Mohammad Durra Pediatrics Hospital.

Fire broke out at the location of the airstrike as the firefighters worked all night to put off the fire in the attack that took place an hour after midnight. Electric power was also cut off to several areas east of Gaza as a result of the strikes.

The strikes of the Israeli warplanes caused severe damage to Al-Mahattah Mosque in the centre of Al-Tuffah neighbourhood.

Warplanes and artillery attacked as well several other locations in the center and south of the Gaza Strip, causing damage but no injuries.

Israel claimed the attacks came after two missiles were fired from Gaza and fell in open areas in southern Israel without causing any damage or injury.
