Crowds gather to meet the crew of the Freedom Flotilla ship as they prepare to leave for Gaza
Tunisian activists and trade unionists are demanding their government prevents and Israeli-chartered cargo ship from docking in the country.
The vessel, which is Turkish-flagged, “appears to be operated on behalf of the Israeli shipping company Zim”, the Electronic Intifada reported yesterday.
“It would be extremely scandalous to allow this boat to dock in Radès, especially since last Sunday [the] Israeli navy intercepted the Freedom Flotilla in international waters,” TACBI, the Tunisian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel, said.
Sami Tahri, the deputy secretary general of the Tunisian General Labour Union, told local radio on Wednesday that the labour federation had asked the government to “verify” the information regarding the ship, and to act to stop it landing. He said that the government had not responded to the UGTT’s urgent requests.
