University staff go on strike

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Staff at government universities launched open strike action on Sunday, the workers union said in a statement.

The strike is an escalation against the PA ministry of education’s failure to meet their demands, a union spokesperson said.

Last week the union said it would start a 3-day strike and escalate action on April 21 if their demands were not met.

University workers have been embroiled in a lengthy dispute with the PA over several issues including the cancellation of taxes on end-of-service benefits, the payment of annual salary increases and job security.
