Meaning and role of the imam in Islam

What does an imam do? The imam leads Islamic worship services, but may also take on a larger role in providing community support and spiritual advice.

How is an imam chosen?

An imam is selected at the community level. Members of the community choose someone who is considered knowledgeable and wise. The imam should know and understand the Quran, and be able to recite it correctly and nicely. The imam is a respected member of the community. In some communities, an imam may be specifically recruited and hired, and may have undergone some special training. In other (smaller) cities, imams are often chosen from among the existing members of the Muslim community. There is no universal governing body to supervise imams; this is done at the community level.

What does an imam do?
The primary responsibility of an imam is to lead Islamic worship services. In fact, the word “imam” itself means “to stand in front of” in Arabic, referring to placement of the imam in front of the worshippers during prayer. The imam recites the verses and words of prayer, and the people follow his movements. During the service, he stands facing away from the worshipers, toward the direction of Makkah. For each of the five daily prayers, the imam is present at the mosque to lead the prayers. On Friday, the imam usually delivers the khutba (sermon). The imam also leads the taraweeh(nightly prayers during Ramadan), either alone or with a partner to share the duty. The imam also leads all other special prayers, such as for funerals, prayers for rain, prayers during an eclipse, and more.

What other role does an imam serve in the community?

In addition to being a prayer leader, the imam may also serve as a member of the larger leadership team in a Muslim community. As a respected member of the community, the imam’s advice may be sought in personal or religious issues. One may ask him for spiritual advice, help with a family issue, or in other times of need. The imam may be involved in visiting the sick, engaging in inter-faith service programs, officiating marriages, and organizing educational gatherings in the mosque. In modern times, the imam is increasingly in a position to educate and reform youth away from radical or extremist viewpoints. Imams reach out to youth, inspire them in peaceful pursuits, and teach them the correct understanding of Islam — in the hopes that they will not fall prey to misguided teachings and resort to violence.

So, an imam is a member of clergy?

No, there is no clergy in Islam. Muslims believe in a direct connection with the Almighty, without need of an intercessor. The imam is simply a leadership position, for which someone is hired or selected from among the community members. A full-time imam may undergo special training, but this is not required. There is no universal governing body to supervise imams; this is done at the community level. The word “imam” can also be used in a broader sense, referring to any person who leads prayer. So in a group of young people, for example, one of them may volunteer or be selected to be the “imam” for that prayer (meaning, he or she will lead the others in prayer).

Among Shia Muslims, the concept of an imam takes on a more central clerical position. They believe that their specific imams were chosen by God to be perfect examples for the faithful. They must be followed, since they were appointed by God and are free from sin. This belief is rejected by the majority of Muslims (Sunni).

Can women be imams?

At the community level, all imams are men. When a group of women are praying without men present, however, a woman may serve as the imam of that prayer. Groups of men, or mixed groups of men and women, must be led by a male imam.

Rival Yemen army units briefly clash near Hadi residence

SANAA (Reuters) – Rival units of Yemen’s divided military briefly traded fire on Thursday outside the residence of the newly elected president, Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, witnesses said.

The exchange was between troops from the First Armoured Division, commanded by a general who mutinied last year against former President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and the central security force led by Saleh’s nephew. There were no reported casualties.

The clash comes less than a week after Hadi was sworn in under a U.S.-backed Gulf Arab plan aimed at halting a slide into lawlessness in the impoverished Arabian peninsula state, where Islamists linked to a wing of al Qaeda have seized chunks of territory during a year of political upheaval.

Mass protests against Saleh were followed by fighting between forces loyal to him, those of rebel general Ali Mohsen and militiamen backed by tribal leaders, leaving parts of the capital in ruins and raising fears of civil war in a country on key oil shipping routes.

Saudi Arabia and Washington, both target of abortive attacks by a Yemen-based arm of al Qaeda, backed Hadi in a single-candidate election aimed at starting a two-year transition during which the military is to be restructured.

In the first significant move to shake up the military structure he inherited from Saleh, Hadi appointed a new commander for the country’s politically sensitive south, state television said.

He also replaced the head of southern Aden province’s security bureau and the provincial governor, the report added.

Separatist rebels have become increasingly active in the country’s south – formerly a separate state and site of a 1994 civil war after four turbulent years of formal union. At least nine people killed in election day violence there.

Many southerners say they were marginalised by Saleh and his loyalists.

BDS Action in London – Protest Against Veolia at Natural History Museum

    • zaterdag 10 maart 2012
    • 12:00 tot 14:00
  • Veolia is once again sponsoring the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition at the Natural History Museum.

Saturday, 10 March, between 12:00 – 2:00pm, we’ll be engaging visitors in a public education campaign outside the

Exhibition Road Entrance, London SW7 5BD

Veolia, a large French multinational, has helped to build and operate a tramway linking illegal settlements in East Jerusalem with Israel. Not only do the settlements contravene article 49 of the 4th Geneva Convention forbidding an occupier transferring its own civilians into the territory it occupies, but in most cases the establishment of the Israeli settlements involves war crimes too. The tramway tightens Israel’s hold on occupied East Jerusalem, ties the settlements more firmly into Israel and undermines chances of a just peace for the Palestinian people.

    Tovlan landfill
In the occupied Jordan Valley, Veolia has been supporting illegal settlements by taking their refuse at its Tovlan landfill site. Veolia has now compounded its offence by actually selling Tovlan to an illegal settlement while maintaining an advisory role.

A Veolia-run bus operates in the occupied West Bank. (Anne Paq/ActiveStills)
Veolia also operates bus services connecting illegal Israeli settlements to Israel. Palestinians were, until recently, forbidden from using the apartheid roads on which the buses travel and Palestinian use of these services is still severely restricted.

Veolia must be made to halt these activities which enable Israel to maintain and tighten its grip on the occupation.

    More about Veolia –

    Transport –

Nearest Tube: South Kensington on the District, Circle and Piccadilly lines.

    Buses: 14, 49, 70, 74, 345, 360, 414 and C1.0

Welcome to Palestine!

    • zaterdag
    • 12:00 tot 14:00
  • Housmans Bookshop, 5 Caledonian Road, London N1 9DY
  • Welcome to Palestine, an initiative that involves international activists flying into Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport and openly declaring their desire to visit Palestine was a successful tactic last July, challenging Israel’s siege of the West Bank that sent a clear signal to the apartheid state that the international community will not remain impassive to injustice.

Even before any activists departed, the Israeli government pressured airlines to prevent passengers they deemed ‘pro-Palestinian’ from boarding aircraft by threatening to send them back on the same flight if they landed in Tel Aviv -something that many carriers did reluctantly.

Israel’s response of detaining and deporting tourists who simply wanted to visit the West Bank fully exposed its siege of Palestine and denial to Palestinians living in the occupied territories to receive visitors, a right even granted to prisoners.

Last July, London BDS reported on the midnight arrival of UK and American activists at Luton Airport who were detained and deported by Israel after declaring upon arrival their intention to visit Bethlehem.

Welcome to Palestine is endorsed by Desmond Tutu, Ronnie Kasrils, Noam Chomsky, Tony Benn, John Pilger and dozens of other international humanitarians.

On Sunday, April 15th 2012, people of conscience from countries throughout the world will once again be boarding flights to Israel’s Ben Gurion Airport in a second “flytilla” to express solidarity with the Palestinian people and drawing attention to Israel’s siege of the West Bank by stating upon arrival to immigration officials their intention to visit Palestine.

Organisers tell us that this year, a high-profile send-off at Luton Airport is planned and in an Electronic Intifada interview, Mick Napier, chair of Scottish PSC and a Welcome to Palestine organiser, stated that regardless of whether or not you’re on a flight, Welcome to Palestine is an international action that everyone can participate in.

Here’s a short documentary about the experiences of several flytilla participants who were detained by Israel:

For those wishing to find out more and be a part of Welcome to Palestine – be it in the air or on the ground – this Saturday there’ll be a briefing and an opportunity to find out how you can get involved.

Global March to Jerusalem: building support for the campaign

 Global March to jerusalem
The March to Jerusalem starts today! The Global March to Jerusalem is on March 30th. Help us build the campaign to prevent the destruction of Palestinian life and culture in Jerusalem.
Since the occupation of Jerusalem, Israeli authorities have revoked the residency rights of 14,561 Palestinians. Jerusalem’s Mayor has declared that Palestinians living outside of the wall will be transferred to the West Bank civil administration resulting in a further 70,000 individuals being effectively barred from the city.
Meanwhile, Israel is planning to demolish homes in Silwan neighbourhood – evicting over 1,000 Palestinian residents – the biggest mass demolition planned since 1967.
What you can do:
  1. Sign our petition  to put pressure on the UK Government to take action over Israel’s ethnic cleansing and settlements in East Jerusalem. This petition will be handed in to Downing Street on 30th March
  2.  Lobby your MP to sign the EDM on the status of Jerusalem.
  3.  Join us on the 30th March for a rally outside the Israeli Embassy!

British Thought Police Target Gaza Activist Ken O’Keefe

Tim King

The ongoing campaign against one of the world’s brightest pro-Palestine activists, our own Ken O’Keefe, hits an all-time low.

Anti-free speech against Israel
Artwork by Carlos Latuff, friend of located in Rio de Janeiro. To see more of his work, visit: Latuff Gallery

(SALEM / LONDON) – We recently showed you Ken O’Keefe’s powerful speech about Israel and the complicity of the western nations in all of the madness arising from the Palestine-Israel conflict.

Not known for speaking in small or uncertain terms, Ken was in particularly good form as he addressed a receptive and cheering audience at Middlesex University. (see: Ken O’Keefe Lecture at Middlesex University – Israeli Apartheid Week)

But lo and behold, in the most, pardon me… chickenshit fashion, an individual went to the police and ‘reported’ Ken’s speech, which is published here and was before, and is clear for all the world to see on YouTube.

These are defenders of Israel’s deadly apartheid politics, that force people to live under two sets of laws; one for Jews and one for those who aren’t, where Palestinian children can be arrested and jailed at the age of six while Israeli children can’t be arrested by police for any reason until they’re twice that age.

Then there are the ‘Jewish only’ roads.

I don’t care if we’re talking about the Wahhabi Muslims in Saudi Arabia, the Sinhalese Buddhists in Sri Lanka, or the hardcore right-wing Zionists in Israel, anyone who believes in this religious zealot garbage is either mad, sick or brainwashed; and they have the gall to call out Ken and the rest of us at different times, in different ways, for simply speaking with a true tongue and without wavering from one continual point: that Israel fails to honor Human Rights and thus does not meet the test as a legitimate government.

It’s almost as if the old east and the old west did a spin on the dance floor; Communist countries continue to liberalize, while the western countries that defeated Adolf Hitler’s Germany increasingly act more like the feared, archaic regimes they defeated.

War crimes go unchecked, that is the biggest problem. Right now Sri Lanka is in Geneva charged with war crimes, yet every time Israel is called onto the stand to face charges, the U.S. uses its ‘super veto’ power to block any action taken, and each time Israel gets off scot-free.

Ken O’Keefe is a hero among men, he has friends of every religion and ethnicity in existence, and there are many Jewish people among the ranks, and that is naturally because Judaism and Israeli Zionism are not the same at all. One is a historic religion, the other is a philosophy coined in the 1890’s by a man named Theodore Herzl. He declared that Palestine should be the future home of the Jewish people. Everything was fine until WWII; Jews were murdered en masse, then survivors fled to Palestine, and by 1948, thanks to a shifty deal engineered by the British, Israel was formed, and the Palestinian tragedy was born, this period is known as ‘The Nakba’.

But getting the police involved?

Seriously, two pro-Israel activists in the audience reported Ken O’Keefe to law enforcement! A Barnet Police spokesman reportedly said: “Evidence from the event is being reviewed. This is obviously a delicate investigation that will require balancing the right to free speech, and the rights of people not to be discriminated against”.

In Ken O’Keefe’s words

The mass murdering criminal UK Government and its equally corrupt police, the ones who are happy to protect Israeli war criminals in the UK by destroying universal jurisdiction. The same UK that is home to the world’s biggest fraudsters and financial terrorists, otherwise known as the banksters. This same UK Police that falsely arrested me on bogus ‘fraud’ non-charges so it could steal my property and support the criminals who have attempted to destroy the much needed Trade Not Aid Mission.

This pathetic and corrupt government and all of its other minions and lackeys can stick it where the sun don’t shine. I will happily go to prison in this Godforsaken land as the price for shouting the truth. So let me repeat; Israel is a criminal state. As is America, which is the ultimate terrorist state and uber-hypocrite. Israeli Mossad worked with high treason traitors in the US government to set explosives in the twin towers and building 7 on 9/11 so as to instigate the fraudulent ‘War on Terror’, a horrendously, purposely un-ending war that has maimed and murdered millions and counting. All for the ‘full spectrum dominance’ agenda that intends to enslave every survivor of this madness.

What I said the other night is more than true, Israel is beyond an Apartheid state. Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu have made that ever-clear, the people of Palestine and the scars they bare are a never ending source of proof.

I repeat, as we continue to sit on the edge of the cliff that is full scale World War III and likely nuclear annihilation, that every racist, corrupt, war murdering state, as well as the UN in its current form, should be destroyed. This includes more than any others, the true ‘Axis of Evil’ in Israel, Britain and America. These three nations are the scourge of humanity and the greatest threat this world has ever faced. Hitler will look like a saint compared to those behind these criminal states if they have their way. Mass de-population is not a ‘theory’, it is their ultimate agenda knowing full well that the fraud they have perpetuated on all of the people is being irreversibly exposed. Their time is running out… and they know this.

These three nations, along with a disgraced and disgusting UN, must be destroyed in their current form, in their place must be people who represent the true will of the people and an absolute commitment to respect for every single persons rights. The right of people to be free and to be happy is sacrosanct, fuck you with your ‘security’ bullshit, the people want freedom and a dignified life, your Orwellian frauds are your own demise should you continue to maintain this facade of ‘democracy’ and ‘civility’. The west have acted like true barbarians and all of us from these lands are guilty for the actions of our criminal governments to one degree or another.

We as people must take responsibility, we must stop shifting blame. These bastards could never get away with what they are doing if we were not so weak, divided and ultimately pathetic. Whereas they are tyrants, we are pathetic for allowing them to exploit and violate us as they do.

There will never be peace in this world as long as we the people allow this disgusting, fraudulent scam to continue. The truth is the truth, and when we rise, the banksters more than anybody else, better beg for forgiveness. And their minions, servile minions to the powers that be, these revolting, stomach churning puppets like the Tony Blair’s and Obama’s and so on, should just spend a few years in Guantanamo to think things out a bit… if they are lucky that is.

I propose a one year amnesty period for all the criminals who come clean, but if they do not, then they should be treated as they have treated others, like sub-human animals with no rights whatsoever.

In a world like this I am ready for whatever comes my way, slander, threats, torture, imprisonment, death, I like every genuine, intelligent person know all too well the price for wielding the truth. So it really does not matter what happens to me, because whenever it is that I meet my maker I shall smile, knowing that I did my best in this very, very fucked up world of ours. I have shown my ultimate respect for all life and made my life an example of the price we should be willing to pay in order to make the world right. I am not alone, I am proud to follow in the footsteps of countless people who made one decision, to face the tyranny without fear and without compromise.

And I am hopeful, I know we the people have the ultimate power. I know it is merely a matter for us to realise this fact, to seize that power, to ultimately create a better world. A world built on truth, justice and ultimately peace.

Watch and share the speech that could mark my imprisonment. Here is the Jewish supremacist Jewish Chronicle’s article spouting their same old hasbara.
— with Joshua Blakeney and 19 others.

What’s to investigate?

This thought police business is a hazard and indicative of what is taking place in the warring western world, where military intervention and public oppression seem to be at the forefront of everything taking place, underscored by economic greed and environmental devastation.

So many have been killed for the sake of Israel, that the numbers are staggering. Yes, there has been resistance over the years and anyone surprised by that is an ignorant person. Literally all of Israel was very recently, all Palestine, and it was itself created under a British mandate.

Ken’s reasons for his dedication to this cause are myriad, but at the top of the list on a personal side, is the fact that Ken is married to a Palestinian woman, his children are Palestinian, and he is a first-hand witness to Israel’s cruel and constant brutality having spent significant time in Gaza.

This is where poor fishermen are attacked daily by the Israeli navy, a military force of all draftees that are encouraged to harm and hassle and sometimes kill these Gazans. The Israelis shoot with sniper rifles, kids who collect rocks for road building, they shoot farmers dead in their own fields for coming too close to the ‘buffer zone’.

Indeed, if there was ever a cause worth dying for, it might be this one. Sooner or later, Israel absolutely must be stopped, as much as anything for the peopleof Israel whose lives are intermingled with other prejudices and discrimination. For example, there are growing problems in Israel for dark-skinned Jews, their political system is wrapped around a morphed view of religious philosophy and the bottom line in this world and in this life, is that all people are the same, none are better than others.

Admittedly Anti-Semantic

Everything about what is taking place, is nothing more than a game of words. These Zionists who attended the Middlesex talk would have gone to the police regardless of the words Ken chose; it wasn’t about the words, it was about the threat Ken represents as a person who has appeared on The BBC’s biggest programs, never looking bad, never failing to make his point and show strength, and his words are not what the dime droppers even claim them to be anyway. Facts are facts and semantics are picky excuses for causing problems for people who challenge fascist authority.

They can fool the police into taking baseless action, but they can’t fool us and they can’t silence Ken by martyring him; look at the recent victory of Khader Adnan, a Palestinian who survived an amazing, frankly record-setting, 66-day Hunger Strike on behalf of Palestinian rights under Jewish law. He nearly joined Bobby Sands, hero of the Irish Republican Army, who died in a Hunger Strike for equal rights, which an ungracious queen finally relented to, after his death. I seriously don’t think they want to do this to Ken, the British authorities should be embarrassed, nothing new there.

Ken O’Keefe stands for the poor, battered, beleaguered Palestinian families, all of them but particularly those in Gaza whom he became so close to; he is a former U.S. Marine and a man of tremendous strength and incredible, peaceful aspirations. He gained fame when Israelis attacked a ship he was aboard called the Mavi Marmara that had a stated goal, along with several other ships, of reaching Gaza to deliver humanitarian aid. The ships had been well checked and no persons aboard the vessels were armed.

Tim King and Ken O’Keefe-

Israel attacked this ship in the early morning hours, with live sniper rounds fired from both helicopters and fast moving boats that paced the Turkish flagged Mavi Marmara. The ship was in international waters when attacked, nine people, journalists and activists, were murdered by the Israeli forces. Several dozen were injured, Israel denied medical treatment to the injured and then brutalized Ken and others in captivity, famous faces of his bloody face have been shown around the world.

The UN and many other agencies declared that the Israeli attack on the unarmed activists in open ocean waters amounted to a series of terrible war crimes. As in the case of Israel’s Gaza attack that left 1400+ dead, obnoxiously called by the Jewish state, ‘Operation Cast Lead’- the UN pressed war crimes and the US used its super veto power to shield Israel from charges. They are all evil in this regard, no decent human being can support that ruthless attack over unguided rocket attacks.

Do you know how many Israelis those fabled ‘Gaza rocket attacks’ from the ‘terrorists’ have killed? 28. That’s right, twenty eight people in all time, since the first rocket attacks in the 90’s. Gaza had over 200 schools and 50 medical facilities specifically targeted by Israel’s US-made weapons.

Israel also used illegal white phosphorous on civilian neighborhoods, they are a lawless, rogue regime and murder is the interest of Israel, killing every last Palestinian or forcing them out of Israel and Palestine into a rotten refugee camp synonymous with the Palestinian Diaspora, that is their goal. Let this moronic exercise in Zionist hatred and confusion steel is all and remind us of the real nature of this deadly never-ending game funded and fueled by the US and UK.

Rebuilding has begun in Silwan but can only continue with your support!

Dear Friend,
I’m writing to you from the West Bank, where I live and work for MECA. Just two weeks ago, our partner in Silwan called to tell me the cultural café that MECA helped fund had been bulldozed. I was shocked and upset but I knew we had to act quickly.

MECA staff sent out an email message and — thanks to the response of dozens of people — the rebuilding has already begun! But it can only continue with your help, again, now.

I want to tell you more about my visit to Silwan the day after the demolition, but first, I ask you to please, do two simple but crucial things now:

  1. Sign a letter to Israeli officials letting them know that you are concerned about the plight of children in Silwan and oppose the destruction of an important community space
  2. Make a donation to help the community rebuild in time for their Mothers’ Day celebration on March 21, 2012. (Mother’s Day in the Arab World)
As I approached the site of the cultural café, I expected to be surprised by the wreckage but I realized this was a familiar sight. After so many years of working and living in Palestine, I have sadly gotten used to the images of rubble left behind in the wake of Israeli bulldozers, tank shells, or missiles.
A young man from Silwan told me about waking up to see Israeli police blocking the road as other officials brought in equipment to demolish the cafe. (See this short video of Mahmoud’s account of the demolition.) They even tried to take the ping pong table and other games but people blocked their way and kept these for children in Silwan.

Even amidst the wreckage of the café, children gathered for a game of soccer while adults sorted through the rubble to salvage materials. The community has already begun work to rebuild the cultural café. With your help, they will complete it in time for aMothers’ Day celebration on March 21.

Each time I visit Silwan I learn more about the hardships the community faces. Children are arrested and beaten. Settlers took over a home while the family was at a wedding. A kindergarten was recently damaged by the settlers’underground excavations.

But I always get a taste of the resilience of the community on these visits too. Families fighting in the Israeli courts to keep their homes. Children performing at concerts for their families and friends. Women learning the traditional art of mosaic-making.

Please, stand with the brave and determined people of Silwan bysending your letter of protest and making the most generous contribution you can afford today.

You support mean so much to people who are struggling every day to protect their children, their homes and their land.

Save Silwan

The Palestinian town of Silwan lies on the edge of East Jerusalem, just outside the walls of the Old City. Many Palestinian families in Silwan now live in fear of imminent eviction by the Israeli authorities in order to make way for a new tourist attraction. The proposed King’s Garden is designed to be a theme park for tourists to walk in the footsteps of the biblical King Solomon. Yet the site chosen for the park is home to over 1,000 Palestinian residents, many of whom have already been served with demolition notices.

The new tourist development would see the largest single demolition of Palestinian homes since 1967, the year that Israel occupied East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Any such demolitions are prohibited by the fourth Geneva Convention and therefore illegal under international humanitarian law, yet Israel has proceeded with them regardless. The UN special rapporteur on human rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Richard Falk, has called Israel’s actions in East Jerusalem and surrounding neighbourhoods like Silwan a “devastating policy designed to achieve the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians”.

Israeli settlers have already moved into parts of Silwan in an attempt to take over the town and evict Palestinian families who have lived there for generations. The illegal Israeli settlement is also threatening to obliterate Palestinian history in Silwan, as Palestinian street names are being replaced with Israeli names. Backing the settlers, the Israeli security forces have stepped up their programme of violence and intimidation against the Palestinian residents of Silwan.

The UK government has condemned the plans for Silwan in the strongest terms. On 30 December 2011, Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt issued a statement saying:

“I condemn the decision by the Jerusalem Local Planning and Building Committee to build additional structures in the Palestinian neighbourhood of Silwan, and housing in the settlement of Gilo. This is another provocative and deeply counter-productive step, the latest in a series by the Israeli authorities.”

Yet such words are meaningless as long as the UK government continues to grant Israel unconditional support as its strategic ally in the Middle East. Indeed, despite the widespread condemnation of Israel’s actions, new demolition orders have been delivered to Silwan residents in January 2012. War on Want is calling on the UK government to take immediate action to prevent the destruction of Palestinian homes in Silwan.
