Hamas armed wing ends truce with Israel

Announcement comes as Israel pounds Gaza for two days with retaliatory air
strikes, killing at least 14 Palestinians.

The Qassam brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that they were no
longer committed to a more than two-year de facto ceasefire with Israel.

“There is no longer any truce with the enemy,” said the statement broadcast
over a Hamas radio station early on Saturday.

Rockets have been launched from Gaza into Israel and Israeli aircraft
have struck targets in the Palestinian territory in the back-and-forth aftermath
of deadly attacks a day before in southern Israel.

At least eleven Palestinians have been killed and 30 were injured in the past
24 hours by Israeli air strikes on the Gaza Strip which began on Thursday.  Four
Israelis have been injured by rockets fired from Gaza.

The casualties are a result of exchanged attacks following a series of deadly
assaults by gunmen who targeted two buses, a car and an army vehicle in the area
north of Israel’s Red Sea resort of Eilat on Thursday.

Eight Israelis, including six civilians and two soldiers, were killed that
day alongside seven of the attackers, among which were two suicide bombers who
detonated near a bus and during a confrontation with soldiers. Over 40 Israelis
were also wounded, local media reported.

Israel said the attackers had infiltrated from the Hamas-run Gaza Strip and
vowed, and officials vowed to “hunt down” the perpetrators.

Israeli officials have blamed a Gaza-based militant group called the Popular
Resistance Committees (PRC) for Thursday’s attacks, although the faction has
denied any involvement. The PRC is not affiliated with the Hamas movement that
governs Gaza.

Three Palestinians including a 5-year-old boy were killed and 3 passersby
were injured in an attack on a vehicle in central Gazas City. Al Jazeera’s
Safwat Al Kahlout reported.

Previously, the latest air strike on the Gaza Strip hit Bureij refugee camp
in central Gaza late Friday night, killing two men.

The Al-Quds Brigade, the armed wing of the militant Islamic Jihad, confirmed
that one of the men, Emad Abu Abda, was their member. The other man’s identity
and possible affiliations were not immediately known.

This was the Israeli air forces’ sixth operation since beginning their raids
in retaliation for Thursday’s incidents.

Hours earlier, the Israeli air force targeted rocket launchers, “two weapons
manufacturing sites in central Gaza” and “terrorist activity in the north and
the south” of the strip”, the Israeli military told Al Jazeera.

Five members of the PRC, including its leader, were killed in Thursday’s
overnight air strike in Gaza’s southern city of Rafah and another killed on
Friday, Al Kahlout reported from Gaza.

Abu Mujahid, a PRC spokesman, has said the group vows to take revenge
“against everything and everyone” for its members’ deaths.

Medical sources said at least three civilians have also been killed,
including two boys aged three and 13 who died early on Friday.

Rockets from Gaza

Over 24 rockets had been fired from Gaza into Israel by Friday night, some
reaching as far as the southern coastal city of Ashdod, the Israeli military

Two rockets fired at Ashdod “caused damage and injuries at a synagogue and
school”, according to a military statement. Four Israeli civilians were injured
in Ashdod, the Israeli medical service Magen David Adom told Al Jazeera.

Binyamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, said on Thursday that his
country “will exact a price, a very heavy price” for those who “attempt to
escalate terrorist war against Israel” and “believe that they can attack our
citizens and get away with it”.

While visiting the wounded at a medical center in the southern city of Beer
Sheva on Friday, Netanyahu said Israel’s ongoing retaliatory measures against
Gaza is not Israel’s “first reaction”. He also pledged to “speed up” the
construction of a bolstered barrier along its southern border with Egypt to
cover 100km of the stretch by the end of the year.

The barrier currently runs for 45km of the full 200km stretch. The Israeli
defence ministry had planned several months ago to complete the project by

Lieutenant Colonel Avital Leibovich, a spokeswoman for the Israeli military,
said Israel does not seek to escalate the situation because it is “not the ones
who chose to target civilian buses and vehicles”.

Leibovich said Israeli forces were targeting “not only specific terror
organisations in Gaza, but rather anyone who has some influence … with
terror”, including groups of people it suspects of launching rocket attacks.

According to Gaza residents, three Hamas-controlled compounds in Rafah were
among the targets hit in Thursday’s late night air strikes.

Ghazi Hamad, Hamas’ deputy foreign minister, denied any connection between
Hamas or the people of Gaza with the attacks in southern Israel.

“From the first moment we are surprised that Israel started to target people.
To target civilians, to target places, to target buildings before knowing who
stands behind this operation. So, I think that Israel [always] considers Gaza a
weak point that they can target them under any circumstances,” he said.

Hamad called the rocket attacks from Gaza,”a kind of natural reaction against
the Israeli aggression against our people.”

He continued: “If they stop their aggression and attacks against Gaza, I
think people here are interested in keeping Gaza calm and quiet.”

also said that Hamas was “surprised” that members of the international community
had not condemned Israel for “killing civilians”.

Blame the Gazans – Punish Them

Mohammed Suliman | 08/19/2011  | The Electronic Intifada

According to the Palestine Papers, Saeb Erekat, the so-called chief Palestinian negotiator, once stated, “”If someone sneezes in Tel Aviv, I get the flu in Jericho.”

That was probably the only thing that makes sense Erekat every said regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Except it wasn’t actually true, unless we think of Erekat, at the moment he made that statement, as every Palestinian in Gaza and replace “Jericho” with “Gaza”. So “if someone sneezes in Tel Aviv, Palestinians in Gaza were soon to be blame for it.”

Yesterday, as I woke up to the news of an attack that took place in Eilat, some 20 kilometeres south of Israel, the first thing that ever came to my mind was, “who the hell did it?”

As my brother excitedly narrated to me the details of the oddly mysterious incident, I was asinine enough to wish the assailants weren’t from Gaza. I naively said to my brother, “let’s hope they don’t turn out to be Gazans.”

Immediately then, I frenziedly went through reports of the incidents on the internet, hoping against hope the blame wouldn’t be placed upon Gaza or at least by some miraculous power, some organization outside of Gaza would officially adopt the attacks and relieve the Gazans of this insane irrationality where the Palestinians in Gaza would be eventually held responsible and “pay a heavy price” for the crimes they never committed.

Only on my previous post on this blog, I wrote, “I was being punished for a misdemeanor I never committed in the first place,” Of course, I didn’t know then that were as prognostic as to come into play a couple of days afterwards.

Soon enough, I was skimming a bit of news related to the incident under the title, “Barak: Gaza is the source of terrorist attacks on southern Israel”

My mind at that exact moment was this way, “but man, wait, that’s not true. I mean no one in Gaza claimed responsibility for the attack, you know, Hamas would have done, had it been them but err, I mean, you can’t just say it’s Gaza when it’s not bla bla bla”

Baloney. He wouldn’t listen. Or he wouldn’t have to listen. And he wouldn’t believe me. And he wouldn’t bother who claimed responsibility and who didn’t. And to be more accurate, that’s exactly what the so-called IDF wanted; that’s what they had been waiting for. An excuse, no matter how lame, baseless and prejudiced it might be, to exercise its favorite habit of bombing, demolishing and killing Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip.

In fact, Israel never needed a pretext to start bombing Gaza. Israel’s warplanes do every day shell the hell out of Gaza. This was a pretext for exercising extrajudicial execution the outcome of which is still on the rise. And yes, it didn’t take long for the aerial, ground and naval operation to get under way. You can’t tell me Israel would miss this chance.

I tweeted, “”Gaza is the source of terrorist attacks on southern Israel” is as well founded as “Gaza is the source of the Ozone hole” but, yea, whatever!”

Who cares on what basis Barak’s accusing finger is pointed— exactly the same way Netanyahu’s is pointed in the photo of the above piece— toward the Palestinians in Gaza of perpetrating these attacks. No basis whatsoever except the very one on which Israel is truthfully regarded as an Apartheid state: the Palestinians in Gaza are no Jews.

But what if by any means Palestinian militants in Gaza are behind the Eilat attacks? Why would Israel kill two little children? Collateral damage? Could one, then, consider the six Israeli civilians killed in the attacks as collateral damage, given the fact that two Israeli soldiers were also killed?

Of course, not. I wondered whether my little sister was a bit stupid when she innocently (naively?) commented on the Eilat attacks saying, “ya haram!” (oh pity!)? Or was that the honest and unimpeachably good-natured involuntary reflex of an innocent girl commenting on the death of another?

I knew I had the same feelings as she did, but after all it wasn’t thoughtful to display such emotions publicly this way. At least for the memory of the several would-be martyrs paying the “heavy price” the Israeli prime minister referred to.

Couldn’t it be that Mahmoud— a boy aging thirteen years just like my sister who made the above remark is— had the same comment, the same feelings, when he came to know Israeli civilians were killed in the attack— Off record:  three massive bombs just hit the area nearby, and Israeli warplanes are intensely flying over Gaza city at the moment.

Why was Mahmoud killed then?

Is that the way Israel will keep lashing out, indiscriminately killing innocent civilians in blind retaliation? Isn’t this “violence, brutality and a cowardly act of terrorism against innocent civilians”, Mrs. Clinton?

Or perhaps this is a life not worth feeling sorry for— oh dear, I can say I literally write under the fire. That was one of our missiles, you know.  Why wouldn’t the U.S. president and his secretary offer their “deepest condolences” for the families of these little children as well?

Indeed, that Obama is the first Black American president was the biggest lie in the U.S. presidential history. He looks awfully whiter than the other wealthy Zionist white congressmen.

Gaza is a Palestinian territory occupied by Israeli military forces and has been living under siege for more than five years. Those people living in the Gaza Strip are the real victims. They are the real oppressed. There is an a humanitarian crisis, a collective punishment, injustice, and occupation that needs to be addressed. Israel should be held accountable for its crimes against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip before we go about criticizing the people for firing few missiles onto their oppressor as an act of protest and defiance. Violence is never inflicted by the oppressed. US-made F16s, Apaches, unmanned overhead drones, gigantic warships, Merkava and other tanks and this whole massive war machine are the real sources of violence.

Indeed, as a friend put it, “the only ‘self-defense’ justified by a colonial occupier is to withdraw from those occupied lands. Very, very simple.” And “Israel justifying this massacre as self-defense is like a robber justifying killing the victim because they wouldn’t hand over their wallet.”

Two more Palestinians killed by Israeli raid in Gaza – Military and Security

Military and Security 8/19/2011 11:03:00 PM

GAZA, Aug 19 (KUNA) — Two Palestinians were killed in an Israeli air raid in central Gaza Strip on Friday, a Palestinian official said.

Spokesperson of ambulance and medical emergency services in Gaza Strip Adham Abu Salmiyah told KUNA an Israeli reconnaissance plane unleashed at least one rocket at a motor bike at the southern entrance of Buraij refugee camp in central Gaza.

The attack killed Anwar Saleem and Emad Abu Abdeh, both 21 years old, he said.

Abu Salmiyah said the bodies of both Palestinians were completely burned.

With these two fatalities, the number of Palestinians killed in Israeli air raids since yesterday rose to 12 with 24 others were injured.

Hamas to respond to Israel attacks

‘Tel Aviv will pay the price for the crimes committed against Gaza people’

Gaza: Israel has blamed rulers of the Gaza Strip for the attacks in southern Israel without, specifying who they believed were behind the attacks.

On Thursday Israeli jets bombed Gaza and killed the secretary general of the Popular Resistance Committees (PRC) and four others in Rafah.

Abu Mojahed the spokesman of the PRC said: “We will respond to this attack and Israel has to pay the price for their crimes against our people.”

Yakob Azera, an Israeli political analyst, said on Israel Radio: “Hamas is the one in charge of Gaza whether it is Hamas or any other faction, the Islamic group ruling the Strip is responsible for the attacks on southern Israel.”

Hamas denied any link to the rocket attacks on Israel.

In a brief statement Hamas said, “we have nothing to do with these attacks in southern Israel but we will respond to any attacks from the Israeli side.”

Azera added: “This might be the biggest operation against Gaza since the Operation Cast Lead in 2009 but still the Israeli generals have not finished drawing their plans.”

Egypt recently started a military operation against extremist groups in Sinai who are believed to have links with Al Qaida.

In the meantime Hamas was monitoring and guarding the Palestinian side of the borders to prevent incursions.

“There are many parties taking advantage of these attacks on southern Israel and the response on Gaza. The biggest winner of these attacks is the Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu,” Shaker Shabat, political analyst, said.

Israel has been facing huge demonstrations for weeks over social injustices and the government failed to stop these rallies but these attacks on Israel did.

Shabat added: “The extreme government led by Netanyahu was unable to deal with the protesters in Israel for weeks.”

A group born with intifada

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), the Gaza-based group blamed by Israel for Thursday’s shootings which killed eight Israelis near Eilat, sprang up in 2000 as an offshoot of the Fatah movement.

The armed faction emerged at the start of the second Palestinian uprising as a violent splinter group from the mainstream Fatah party which is headed by Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas.

It was one of several groups involved in the capture of Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in June 2006, and was accused by Israel on Thursday of launching a deadly spate of shooting attacks on a desert road near Eilat with the aim of snatching another soldier.

Since its formation in September 2000, the PRC’s sole raison d’etre appears to be organising anti-Israeli attacks, and over the years it has attracted breakaway members from all the main factions, including the nationalist Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, as well as Hamas and the radical Islamic Jihad.

The wide-ranging background of its membership has allowed it to frequently collaborate with other groups. In June 2006, PRC fighters participated in a deadly cross-border operation with the armed wing of Hamas and a previously-unknown group called the Army of Islam which saw them kill two Israeli soldiers and capture Shalit, who is still being held at a secret location in Gaza.

The Army of Islam had been set up several months earlier by PRC leader Jamal Abu Samhadana as a small offshoot, with sources within the movement saying they were largely considered to be one and the same. On Thursday, Israel launched another airstrike on a building in Rafah, killing the group’s current leader, Kamal Al Nairab, and three other senior operatives, in what the military said was retaliation for the attacks in the Negev desert.
