Israel tightens its 14-year-old siege imposed on Gaza

Health Ministry warned that severe shortage of electricity undermines offering health services

Israel has banned all imports except food and medical supplies into the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Authority (PA) revealed on Sunday.

“Israel decided to stop the entry of all goods and commodities excluding the food and medicines,” the Palestinian General Administration of Crossings and Borders (GACB) said.

According to the GACB, these restrictions came 13 days after halting the entry of fuel and construction material from Karm abu Salem, the only commercial crossing in the Gaza Strip.

Israel said that the new restrictions related to the ongoing tension between Israel and the besieged coastal enclave.

Rights groups warned of the dangerous consequences of the closure of Karm abu Salem crossing on the humanitarian situation in Gaza.

Israel has cut fuel imports into Gaza since last week, pushing the only power plant in the coastal enclave to shut down.

Since 2007, the Gaza Strip has groaned under a crippling Israeli blockade that has deprived its roughly two million inhabitants of many vital commodities, including food, fuel and medicine.
