CCOVID-19 tests are being carried out at the Central Laboratory of the Palestinian Ministry of Health in the city of Ramallah, West Bank on March 16, 2020

A number of Belgian NGOs have called to put pressure on the Israeli occupation authorities in order to release blocked Palestinian tax money to enable the Palestinian Authority (PA) to afford the medical kits necessary to fight the outbreak of the coronavirus, Quds Net News Agency reported on Friday.

This came in a letter sent by the NGOs to the Belgian Foreign Minister Philippe Goffin and the Belgian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, as well as to the European Union (EU) High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.

In the letter, the NGOs called for taking exceptional decisions and accelerating efforts to lift the Israeli siege imposed on Gaza for years, in order to facilitate the internationally-backed Palestinian associations to fight the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The NGOs highlighted the Israeli ban on the entry of medical equipment to the Gaza Strip and the essential kits needed for fight against the pandemic, stressing that these actions mount to crimes against humanity.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Belgium-Palestinian Friendship Association sent a letter to Goffin, asking him to quickly take the necessary steps towards putting pressure on Israel in order to allow the entry of medical equipment to Gaza, mainly respirators.

Covid19 in Palestine: Palestinians’ Double Struggle against an Epidemic and Apartheid

The head of the association stressed that his country must ask Israel to immediately release all Palestinian prisoners, mainly children, women and those under administrative detention, as well as to stop raiding Palestinian homes.

The head of the association sent the same letter to the Israeli Ambassador to Belgium Emmanuel Nahshon. He communicated to Nahshon that Israel as an occupying power must be responsible for the well-being of the Palestinians as stated by international law.

The NGOs called for the United Nations (UN) and the EU to offer immediate support to the Palestinians, to help them fight the coronavirus pandemic and to afford the required medical equipment.

Israeli Soldiers Injure Six Palestinians, Including Two Children, In Kufur Qaddoum

Israeli soldiers attacked, Friday, the weekly procession against the Annexation Wall and colonies in Kufur Qaddoum town, east of the northern West Bank city of Qalqilia, and injured six Palestinians, including two children.

Morad Eshteiwi, the coordinator of the Popular Committee against the Annexation Wall and Colonies in Kufur Qaddoum, said the soldiers resorted to the excessive use of force against the protesters, by firing many rubber-coated steel bullets, high-velocity gas bombs and concussion grenades.

Many Palestinian youngsters started throwing stones at the invading soldiers, who fired a few live rounds, rubber-coated steel bullets, gas bombs, and concussion grenades.

Eshteiwi added that the soldiers injured two children and four young men, before local medics of the Palestinian Red Crescent provided treatment to them, without the need for hospitalization.

The soldiers also ambushed many protesters in an attempt to abduct them but were unable to do so.

Kufur Qaddoum witnesses frequent Israeli invasions, assaults and abductions as it continues to hold its weekly nonviolent processions against the illegal Annexation Wall and colonies, and against the closure of the main road, which was blockaded by the military sixteen years ago, to enable easy access for colonialist settlers driving to and from the Kedumim colony, built on private Palestinian lands.

Rolverdeling

Man

Palestine Trade Union Federation calls to boycott Israeli Histadrut for violations against Palestinian labourers

The current situation highlights clearly, yet again, the Histadrut’s status as quasi-state institution, invested in maintaining Israel’s stranglehold over the Palestinian people. It operates against Palestinian worker’s rights and never for them

On Labour Day, the Palestinian trade union movement salutes workers around the world, especially all essential workers putting their lives on the line during the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We pay tribute to all the workers and workplace activists we have lost to this virus. This pandemic has exposed how essential, yet undervalued and unrecognized our collective labour is to the functioning of the global economy.

Here in Occupied Palestine, we face this pandemic under conditions of colonial discrimination, a military occupation and a 13-year siege on the Gaza strip. Years of systemic economic de-development policies have left Palestinians with inadequate health infrastructure, a stagnating economy and unprecedented levels of unemployment over 34% in the West Bank and Gaza before the spread of COVID-19 and have since risen to more than 60%.

The assault on our very livelihoods has been methodical and
continuous. Palestinian peasants and workers bare the brunt of Israel’s policies of land confiscation, movement restrictions, and a discriminatory permit system.

This pandemic exacerbates this already dire situation. Yet, as always, we remain steadfast and hope this moment can also create new openings, helping us to connect with others to build workers power and a renewed internationalism.

We note, that the pandemic has not stopped or eased the military occupation’s practices – Israeli soldiers have shut down clinics in Jerusalem and the Jordan Valley, settler violence has escalated, while arbitrary arrests and home demolitions continue. Most disturbing has been the treatment of the 133,000 Palestinian workers inside the Green Line and illegal settlements, many lost their jobs or continued employment was made conditional on them staying inside the Green Line.

In the meantime, Israeli employers never provided adequate housing or healthcare provisions, eventually forcing many workers to return to the West Bank. Workers who contracted the virus on the job were given no health care, some were deserted at checkpoints for merely displaying COVID19 symptoms.

The Israeli economy depends and thrives on the back of exploiting Palestinian workers, particularly construction workers, yet wants to hold no responsibility for their health and safety. It is telling that the majority of recorded COVID-19 cases (74%) in the West Bank are labourers who work inside the Green Line and illegal settlements or those in their immediate surroundings. For example, the
first mortality was of a woman who contracted the virus from her son who worked in the Settlement Industrial Zones.

In this context, we stress that the Israeli trade union federation, the Histadrut receives dues form these Palestinian workers, deducted directly from salaries – dues estimated
at 3 million NIS monthly – these deductions are meant for social benefits and trade union protections.

Technically the Histadrut splits these dues with the Palestinian General Federation of Trade Unions (PGFTU), but many times they are withheld.
Despite deducting dues from workers’ wages, to date the Histadrut has said and done nothing to protect their basic rights to safe working conditions and health benefits.

The current situation highlights clearly, yet again, the Histadrut’s status as quasi-state institution, invested in maintaining Israel’s stranglehold over the Palestinian people. It operates against Palestinian worker’s rights and never for them. We urge rank and file members of all trade unions to renew efforts to boycott the Histadrut and pressure it to end its system of wage deduction without rights, in violation of workers’ basic rights and international standards.

As the Histadrut continues to exploit Palestinian workers, trade unions internationally should not give cover for its actions.

Finally, while exploitative Israeli policies against Palestinian workers are long standing, we are also enduring harsh austerity measures due to cuts in donor aid and structural adjustment policies imposed by international financial institutions.

The Palestinian Authority’s adherence to a strict neoliberal economic programme has weakened our collective bargaining power. Steps taken by the Palestinian Authority to contain the virus have thus far been biased to the interest of Palestinian capital, rather than shielding and supporting workers.

We ask all trade unions and solidarity organisations standing with the Palestinian people, to make central in their work and demands the lives of Palestinian workers and the most vulnerable in society.

British MPs demand sanctions on ‘Israel’ over annexation of occupied Palestinian territory

London (QNN)- 127 British politicians from all parties have written to the British Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary urging them to make clear publicly to the occupation state that any annexation of occupied Palestinian territory “will have severe consequences including sanctions”.

The letter, signed by the former Tory chairman Lord Patten and the former international development secretary Andrew Mitchell, says annexation would be clearly illegal under international law.

“International law is crystal clear. The acquisition of territory through war is prohibited,” the document reads.

The signatories, which also include diplomats and prominent campaigners, point out that the UK did not hesitate to sanction Russia after the annexation of Crimea, noting that any move in the West Bank would warrant a similar response.

“Britain quite properly opposed these acts with appropriate measures, including robust sanctions,” the letter said.

The Council for Arab-British Understanding (Caabu), which organised the letter, said “Politicians including former cabinet members, ministers and senior diplomats, demanded actions not words in opposing any Israeli annexation.”

In a joint statement in September last year by the UK government, together with France, Germany, Italy and Spain, the UK warned any unilateral annexation of any part of the West Bank would be “a serious breach of international law”.

David Jones, the chair of Caabu, said he regretfully thought Netanyahu would only listen to threats. Crispin Blunt, one of the signatories and the former chair of the foreign affairs select committee, said the issue was a massive test for the UK that he hoped his country would pass. He said he hoped Britain would take a stand by saying international law does stand for something, and bullying does not pay.

‘Israel’ to establish settlers’ cemetery on 140 dunums of West Bank land

Occupied West Bank (QNN)- Israeli Maariv newspaper reported that the Israeli government approved the establishment of a settlers’ cemetery near the village of Kafr Qasim in the north of the occupied West Bank.

The newspaper added that the occupation state will establish the cemetery near the illegal settlement of Sha’ar Hashomron on nearly 140 dunums of occupied land and will accommodate nearly 30,000 graves.

Meanwhile, the vice president of the ‘Shomron’ settlement council claimed that “the cemetery proves that we will stay here forever.”

“We are preparing for settling one million Jews in the north of the West Bank and we are building the infrastructure for that”, he added.

The head of the ‘Ornet’ settlement council noted that “regional cooperation would help build a new industrial zone for settlers.”

OCHA: ‘Israel’ arrested 100 Palestinians mostly from Jerusalem

Occupied Jerusalem (QNN)- The Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory, Jamie McGoldrick, called on the occupation state in OCHA bi-monthly report to stop its demolition policy in the West Bank and Jerusalem.

In OCHA bi-monthly report, McGoldrick stated that the occupation state demolished nine buildings owned by native Palestinians, displacing a family of eight and causing damages for 19 others.

The report also stated that ‘Israel’ demolished a house in Ein ad-Duyuk at-Tahta community near Jericho, which was built as a donation. Five other buildings, that were built as donations in the community, were demolished as well.

The report added that Israeli illegal settler uprooted nearly 470 olive trees in different areas throughout the West Bank. They also physically attacked native Palestinians in Hebron and Ramallah.

The average of weekly settlers’ attacks increased to 80% with the start of March, according to the report.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces carried out 99 storm and arrest attacks throughout the West Bank. They arrested over 100 native Palestinians, including 55 from occupied Jerusalem.

Regarding the Israeli assaults against Palestinian farmers in Gaza, the Israeli army opened fire over 48 times at Palestinian farmers and shepherds in the besieged enclave.

The Israeli navy also opened fire at a Palestinian fisherman, wounding him in his head. It also attacked other fishing boats in the sea of Gaza.

Israeli spy firm uses coronavirus cover to impose global mass surveillance

NSO’s nefarious mercenary behaviour has earned it some well-deserved negative publicity over the last few years

By Asa Winstanley

Due to lacking the least demands of morals, Israeli occupation’s NSO Group has become one of Israel’s most notorious mercenary private spy agencies.

For an eye-wateringly high fee, the firm flogs a malware suite called Pegasus in order to allow some of the world’s worst dictatorships to spy on its enemies.

Once infiltrated onto a target’s phone, Pegasus can steal an alarming amount of information, including audio and video records, email, text messages, files and photographs.

NSO’s activities amount to state-sanctioned cybercrime.

Like other Israeli private spy agencies, NSO Group’s mercenary activities are deeply enmeshed with the state’s official spy agencies, such as their cybercrime gang, Unit 8200.

NSO Group, of course, claims its activities are legitimate, and its software is only used to target “terrorists” and other assorted criminals.

But these claims are transparently false.

Cybercrime experts have linked NSO’s spyware system to attacks on dissidents, journalists and human rights workers the world over.

These have included reporter Javier Valdez, who was shot dead by a cartel in Mexico. Pegasus was then used to target his family and colleagues. Amnesty International have been targetted too, and they are one of several outfits suing NSO Group for its abuses.

NSO’s system has also been indirectly implicated in the death of exiled Saudi columnist, Jamal Khashoggi – who was so brutally murdered by a Saudi royal death squad in Turkey in 2018. Pegasus was used to intercept phone calls between him and some of his associates.

NSO has long unconvincingly claimed that it has no control over how its clients operate the software systems it sells.

But new court filings in the US this week suggested just how calculated a lie that claim has always been.

Facebook is one of the companies suing NSO Group for hacking users of WhatsApp – the popular messaging app owned by the social media giant.

The app was the primary attack vector for Pegasus – in other words, a now-patched security flaw in WhatsApp was used to infiltrate Pegasus onto targets’ phones.

WhatsApp revealed, in its investigation of the NSO hack of its users filed in court, that servers controlled by NSO – and not its government clients – were an “integral” part of the attacks, according to The Guardian in Washington DC.

That is to say that, according to these court filings, the Pegasus “software suite” sounded very much like a service rather than a simple off-the-shelf software product.

This would make far more sense.

Pegasus is reported to have cost its government clients tens of millions of dollars to license. If it were a simple off-the-shelf software product that NSO has no control over once it sells, it seems far more likely that the clients would have pirated the software rather than pay such astronomical fees.

NSO’s nefarious mercenary behaviour has earned it some well-deserved negative publicity over the last few years.

So now, it is attempting to use the global COVID-19 pandemic to launder its image.

Both NSO and Israel’s racist anti-Arab Defence Minister Naftali Bennett have been using Western media stooges to peddle something it calls “Fleming”, as a supposed miracle cure for the coronavirus.

The World Health Organisation claims that contract tracing has an important role to play in defeating the killer pandemic – compiling lists of everyone infected persons have been in contact with since they got the virus so that they can be warned and tested.

NSO and Israel have been peddling “Fleming” as a high-tech contract tracing solution.

But according to one cybercrime expert, the project looks more like a ruse to expand NSO from the world of targetted cybercrime, and into the realm of invasive mass surveillance.

John Scott-Railton, a senior researcher with CitizenLab, analysed screenshots of “Fleming” released publicly by NSO and Bennett. He concluded that it is probably not effective for any genuine contact tracing effort and looks more like another spy tool – perhaps even just a new face for the old ones.

He suggested that Fleming: “Is actually a skin on NSO’s existing surveillance software. NSO can’t say because they are pushing it [to] some existing espionage customers, and naming them is forbidden by contract.”

NSO and other mercenary Israeli spy firms – such as Black Cube, which helped convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein spy on his victims as revenge for daring to speak out – have one particular advantage in the market.

They have a literally captive population – the Palestinians – as a test subject.

Whistleblowers from Unit 8200 revealed that their cybercrime gang spies on the entire Palestinian population.

Such criminals are not to be trusted with our safety during a global pandemic.
