US judge orders Palestinian deposits over attacks

An Israeli soldier runs past a flag belonging to the ruling Hamas movement in the Gaza Strip, on November 17, 2012

NEW YORK (AFP) — A US judge Monday ordered Palestinian authorities to post $10 million in cash or bond while they appeal a ruling to pay hundreds of millions of dollars to American victims of attacks.Judge George Daniels said the Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization must also deposit $1 million every 30 days, pending appeal of the February verdict.A New York jury found the PA and PLO liable for six attacks in Jerusalem between 2002-2004, awarding American victims and their families damages that amounted to $655.5 million.Daniels said the judgment in favor of the plaintiffs would be entered in the next 60 days, but would be stayed pending appeal as long as the deposits were made with the clerk of the court. Two weeks ago, the Obama administration urged Daniels to “carefully consider” the PA’s precarious finances in deciding whether to impose a bond requirement.Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken raised “significant concerns” about what could happen if a bond “severely compromised the Palestinian Authority’s ability to operate as a governmental authority.”He said that depriving the PA “of a significant portion” of its revenue would “severely compromise” its ability to operate and warned that any collapse of the PA would “undermine” US foreign policy and “add a new destabilizing factor to the region.”The six bombings and shootings killed 33 people and wounded more than 390 others between January 2002 and January 2004.They were carried out by Hamas and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades — blacklisted as terrorist organizations in the United States — during the Second Intifada, or Palestinian uprising. The plaintiffs claimed that the PA and PLO were responsible for providing material support to the groups, and the court heard that members of both groups were on the PA and PLO payroll.Defense lawyers said there was no conclusive evidence that the senior leadership of the PA or PLO were involved in planning or approving specific acts of violence. They disputed that the leadership should be held responsible for “crazy” attacks carried out by people who acted independently. The six attacks took place against Hebrew University, in Jaffa Road, King George Street, against the number 19 bus and in French Hill, a Jewish settlement in east Jerusalem.

Het antigojisme van Esther Voet

By Engelbert Luitsz               ©              (www.alexandrina.nl/?p=4124)

“Het Palestijns-Israëlisch conflict is right versus right“, verklaarde ze blijmoedig.

Israeli President: Israel Has ‘Right’ To Settle In West Bank

“For me, our right to this land is not a matter of political debate. It is a basic fact of modern Zionism”

A 2008 photo of Israeli lawmaker Reuven Rivlin

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin

Jerusalem (AFP) – President Reuven Rivlin said during talks with settler leaders on Monday that Israel had a “right” to build settlements in the occupied West Bank, his office said in a statement.

“I love the land of Israel with all my heart. I have never and will never give up on this land. For me, our right to this land is not a matter of political debate. It is a basic fact of modern Zionism,” Rivlin said,

For Rivlin the “land of Israel” includes the occupied West Bank where Jewish settlements are considered illegal under international law.

The settlements are considered a major obstacle to peace negotiations with the Palestinians, who see the land as part of a future independent state.

Western nations have called repeatedly on Israel to halt such projects.

“We must not give anyone the sense that we are in any doubt about our right to our land. For me, the settlement of the land of Israel is an expression of that right, our historical right, our national right,” Rivlin said.

His comments come at a time of heightened tension between Israel and the Palestinians following the death in July of a Palestinian toddler and his father in an arson attack on their home.

In the wake of the firebombing in the West Bank village of Duma, three alleged Jewish extremists were placed in administrative detention.

On Sunday, the Shin Bet domestic security agency said the deadly attack had “emanated” from a wildcat Jewish settlement outpost near Duma.

The agency said “restraining orders” restricting the movement of 10 activists had been issued as a result.

Rivlin condemned “Jewish terrorism” after the July arson attack in a post on Facebook, which was later followed by death threats against him.

Iran persistent in support for Palestinian nation and calls for Muslim Unity

Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani underlined Iran’s support for the Palestinian nation and cause.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran supports all Muslim oppressed nations, including the Palestinian nation,” Larijani said in a meeting with Head of Mauritania-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group in Tehran on Sunday.

Larijani reiterated that the extremist and terrorist groups are committing different crimes in the Muslim countries and the Muslim states leaders should pay sufficient attention to the return of Muslim world to unity and solidarity.

Larijani pointed to potential capacities, including parliamentarian approaches for the expansion of relations between the two countries in different areas, and said, “Parliamentary relations is influential in the expansion of bilateral ties in different political, economic and cultural fields.”

“The Iranian parliament supports expansion of ties at different levels,” he added.

1,800 sick Palestinian prisoners inside israeli gulags

Jafar Awad, Palestinian prisoner suffered anonymous illness inside Israeli jails and did not receive proper treatment. When he became in desperate conditions, he was released last week to die just days later on. Days of Palestine, West Bank –Palestinian Prisoner Club (PPC) said on Thursday that 1,800 sick Palestinian prisoners are inside Israeli occupation jails. “A large number of the sick prisoners suffer chronic illnesses,” the PPC said in a statement. “Meanwhile, almost all the prisoners do not receive proper treatment.”

Palestinian Prisoner Club (PPC) said on Thursday that 1,800 sick Palestinian prisoners are inside Israeli occupation jails.

Jafar Awad, Palestinian prisoner suffered anonymous illness inside Israeli jails and did not receive proper treatment. When he became in desperate conditions, he was released last week to die just days later on.

The statement said that the PPC lawyer had visited Eshel Prison and met 30 sick prisoners, whom the lawyer said, are in an “urgent needed for proper treatment.”

“All what the prisoners have, regarding treatment,” said the lawyer, “is only painkillers.”

“Take an example,” the lawyer said, “the prisoner Riyad Li’mour from Bethlehem. He is spending 11 life sentences and is suffering a very much deteriorated health condition. He was admitted to the clinic of Al-Ramlah Prison, but when he remained unchanged, he was returned back to Eshel.”

According to the lawyer, many of the prisoners with serious conditions stay for a long time in the clinic of Al-Ramlah Prison, but have nothing more than painkillers.

“The claims that the Israeli prison services offer proper treatment for the prisoners are false,” the PPC lawyer said according to the statement.

Hence, the PPC called for the international community and all the concerned bodies to do whatever they can to save the lives of the sick Palestinian prisoners inside the Israeli jail.

Thousands of Palestinians displaced by Lebanon camp clashes

Smoke billows in the Ain El-Helweh Palestinian refugee camp near Sidon, Lebanon, on August 23, 2015

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Thousands of Palestinians have been displaced by violent clashes in Lebanon’s largest refugee camp near southern Sidon, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees said Tuesday.

UNRWA Spokesperson Chris Gunness said that armed clashes in the Ain al-Helweh camp have had a “serious impact on the Palestine refugee community.”
Three people were killed in clashes overnight and into Tuesday morning in fighting between the Jund al-Sham Islamist group and members of President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement.
Despite reports of a ceasefire, as many as 3,000 Palestinians may have been displaced, Gunness said, with UNRWA having limited access and movement in and around the refugee camp.
“We are deeply concerned over reports that civilians are endangered and that our installations have been directly affected by the fighting,” he said.
“UNRWA condemns any armed group that fails to respect its obligations under international law to protect civilians and to respect the inviolability of United Nations premises.”
UNRWA has mobilized a humanitarian response with its partners to provide food, medical assistance, and shelter and will continue to monitor the situation, Gunness added.
Tensions have been running high for months between Palestinian factions and Islamists inside Ain al-Helweh, an impoverished and overcrowded camp.
More than 54,000 registered Palestinian refugees live in the camp, who have been joined in recent years by thousands of Palestinians fleeing the fighting in Syria.
More than 450,000 Palestinians are registered in Lebanon with UNRWA. Most live in squalid conditions in 12 official refugee camps and face a variety of legal restrictions, including on their employment.

Texas official suggests bombing Muslims with nuclear weapons

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller

Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller has posted a Facebook photo suggesting bombing of “the Muslim world” with nuclear weapons.

The Facebook photo posted on Sunday night shows a mushroom cloud rising up through the air after the explosion of an atomic bomb with a text saying “Japan has been at peace with the US since August 9, 1945. It’s time we made peace with the Muslim world.”

On August 6, 1945, the US dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and three days later another atomic bomb on Nagasaki during World War II, killing at least 129,000 civilians and prompting Japan’s unconditional surrender.

Miller’s Facebook photo was removed sometime on Monday morning but it has received more than 300 comments.

He is now under harsh criticism but has not apologized for posting the controversial photo. His office has not responded to requests for comment.

Sid Miller will not apologize for the social media post that calls for the atomic bombing of “the Muslim world.”

Todd Smith, the Republican’s campaign spokesman, said that, “We’re not going to apologize for the posts that show up on our Facebook page.”

Smith said about 18 people have access to the campaign account. “I don’t know who did it, but I’m not going to start a witch hunt to find out who did.”

Texas Democrats released a statement Monday afternoon condemning Miller’s post.

“It is unacceptable for Republican Sid Miller to be promoting such disgusting rhetoric. Sadly, this kind of racist, xenophobic hate speech qualifies you for higher office with Republicans’ Tea Party fringe base,” said Manny Garcia, Texas Democratic Party’s deputy executive director.

“We hope Sid Miller shows some respect for Texans and the responsibility of holding state office and issues an apology,” he added.

In January, Miller said that he could not sleep at night for the fear of the United States becoming a “Muslim country.”

During the Texas Public Policy Foundation forum, he raised the issue, asking, “Are we doing enough?”

IOF rolls into northern Gaza, opens fire at farmers, civilian homes

GAZA, (PIC)– The Israeli occupation forces (IOF) at dawn Tuesday rolled into the northern area of the blockaded Gaza Strip, leveled Palestinian cultivated lands, and attacked Palestinian farmers and homes with random spates of gunfire.

A number of Israeli army bulldozers and tanks moved some 100 meters into the northeastern corners of Beit Hanoun, to the north of Gaza, and razed Palestinian cultivated land lots without prior notices, an on-the-spot observer told the Quds Press.

The invading IOF troops targeted the Palestinian farmers and civilian homes with randomly-shot barrages of gunfire, the same source added.

The incursion is another chain in the series of Israeli violations of the Cairo-brokered ceasefire accord signed with Palestinian resistance factions in the wake of last summer’s Israeli offensive on Gaza.

An Israeli 51-day military aggression on the besieged coastal enclave last summer took away the lives of over 2,200 Palestinians, mostly civilian children and women, and left thousands of others critically wounded.

Toll of Syrian air-strikes near Damascus rises to 247 in 10 days

Toll of Syrian air-strikes near Damascus rises to 247 in 10 days
A member of the Syrian Red Crescent inspect rubble searching for victims in the rebel-held area of Damascus, following shelling and air raids by Syrian government forces on August 22, 2015

BEIRUT: Syrian government air-strikes on areas east of Damascus have killed 247 people in the last 10 days, including 50 children, and wounded 1,000 more people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Tuesday.

The attacks on the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region included August 16 air-strikes that killed 117 people in a marketplace in Douma, some 15 km (10 miles) northeast of the capital. The area is besieged by government forces.

A rescue service operating in the rebel-held region, the Civil Defence, has documented 265 deaths, including 44 children and 33 women in the same period, said the spokesman for Rif Damascus – the rural area around the city. Speaking to Reuters via the internet, he put the wounded at 1,200.

The Civil Defence has declared Douma a disaster zone.

The air-strikes near Damascus have coincided with a wider intensification of the four-year-old civil war estimated to have killed around a quarter of a million people and driven more than 11 million from their homes.

Fighting between government forces and rebels has accelerated on numerous fronts in western Syria.

The Observatory reported fighting between rebels and government forces and militias fighting alongside them on Tuesday in the Eastern Ghouta town of Harasta, the target of a recently launched rebel offensive against government.

The United States said the August 16 air strike in Douma showed President Bashar al-Assad had lost legitimacy and called for “a genuine political transition”. But Syria’s political opposition said the protracted conflict could not be resolved if such attacks went unpunished.

Government-held Damascus, the seat of Assad’s power, has also been struck in a surge of rocket fire this month. Since August 13, the Observatory says rocket fire on the city has killed 27 people and wounded dozens more.

Nature reserves, Israeli pretext to grab Palestinian lands in Salfit (report)

SALFIT, (PIC)– Farmers from Kufr al-Deek, Deir Istiya, and Qarawat Bani Hassan towns, west of Salfit, are complaining that their lands are being stolen at the hands of the Israeli occupation authorities (IOA) but not by the ordinary ways of stealing like bulldozing and confiscating, but under the name of protecting “nature reserves” which is  a prelude to misappropriate the Palestinian lands.

Palestinian statistics indicate that the IOA and Jewish settlers are controlling about 70% of Salfit lands. Nature reserves have become an easy pretext to confiscate more Palestinian fertile lands.

Amal Qoqash, mayor of Deir Istiya, affirmed that the IOA has confiscated spacious agricultural lands in Wadi Qana under the pretext that the area is a nature reserve.

Settlements like Yakir and El Matan and others have been expanded at the expense of Palestinian-owned lands, according to the mayor.

She added that the settlers have taken control over two wells close to Rafafa settlement and that they are confiscating more lands to expand the settlement bypass road leading to Wadi Qana.

“In the beginning of 2014, the IOA and the so-called Israeli Nature and Parks Authority uprooted more than 2000 olive trees arguing that Wadi Qana is a nature reserve, and I’m afraid that I might lose my land at any moment under this fallacious pretext,” Ali Mansour, a farmer from Deir Istiya, said.

Dr. Khalil Tufkaji, Chairman of Maps Department at the Arab Studies Society, asserted that the IOA is using Israeli laws specially tailored to serve Palestinian lands’ confiscation. He also drew attention to the gravity of the Israeli decision to divide the West Bank to six regions separated from one another.

For his part, the Palestinian researcher Khaled Maali stressed that the Israeli Nature and Parks Authority is expelling the Palestinian farmers and confiscating their lands under pretext of protecting the nature reserves while the Palestinian farmers have been preserving the natural balance for hundreds of years.

Maali said that there are more than 30 Israeli nature reserves that misappropriate more than 10% of the West Bank lands, three of which are in Salfit, and added that in 1983 the IOA declared Wadi Qana and other fertile agricultural lands “nature reserves”.

Maali affirmed that the Palestinians are aware that the Israeli occupation is using the nature reserves as a means to legalize the Palestinian land grab, and highlighted that this flagrantly violates the international law and The Hague convention which protects the civilians, their lives, careers, and their lands from being confiscated.
