5,000 prisoners in Israeli jails

The director of the statistics Department at the Ministry of Prisoners’ in the Palestinian Authority Abdel Nasser Farawana, stated today the 27th of May, 2013 that about 5,000 prisoners languishing in Israeli jails, including 246 children.


Farawna explained, in a statistical report released today, that since the Nakba of 1948 to date, more than 800,000 of Palestinians were arrested, and that the most brutal violence was perform against the Arab and Palestinian prisoners and detainees in the phase that followed the catastrophe i,e, Nakba of 1948 and even 1967, where the israeli occupation performed arbitrary arrests, in addition to torture and deliberate direct physical harm to detainees, in the form of group executions of prisoners and detainees, noting that the Israeli occupation is still performing the above mentioned to date.
Farawna added that 78,000 arrests of the total number of cases had been recorded since the start of the Al-Aqsa Intifada on the 28th of September 2000 until today, and that the Israeli occupation arrests included all segments of the Palestinian people and didn’t exclude any of them.
According to the report, Israeli occupation arrested during the second Palestinian Intifada more than 950 females, more than 9000 children, nearly 60 former MPs and ministers, dozens of journalists, academics and hundreds of political and social leaders.
Farawna pointed out that the Israeli occupation is still holding in its prisons and detention camps nearly 5,000 prisoners in harsh conditions, lacking the minimum of human rights stipulated in international agreements and conventions, including 246 children. It’s worth mentioning here that the report confirmed that among these prisoners there are 533 prisoners serving life sentences for once or several times.
