Issa Qaraqe said Israeli guards raided section six of the jail and tried to force detainees to undergo strip searches. Prisoners refused, leading to clashes which lasted two hours, he said.
Prison guards fired tear gas and severely beat detainees with batons. Some prisoners were put in solitary confinement, the minister said.
Israeli guards closed the section and cut off electricity and water, he added.
“Israel is responsible for Palestinian detainees’ lives and health. We condemn this aggressive attack on Palestinian prisoners, and we call the international community to provide safety and protection for Palestinian prisoners,” Qaraqe said in a statement.
The Israel Prison Service did not immediately return calls.
