After 8,763 soldiers killed and a stream of defectors, Assad still thinks he can win

Brig.-Gen Manas Tlass deserts his master
Brig.-Gen Manas Tlass deserts his master

In its 17-month crackdown on dissent, the Syrian army had by early July, lost 8,763 dead and 21,357 wounded. Some units lost a quarter of their manpower. Around 600 tanks and APCs – six percent of the Syrian armored corps fleet – were crippled. Around 200 can be fixed but repairs will take three months.

Defections from all ranks up to general are depleting combat divisions. All in all, the Syrian army has never been hit with this scale of casualties and losses. Yet Bashar Assad and his ruling family, some members of whom hold high military, security and intelligence command, show no cracks or fear of impending failure.

Just the reverse: President Assad boasted to the Turkish Hurriyet in a recent interview that were it not for the majority support he enjoys from the Syrian people he would have fallen like the Persian Shah in 1979.

The Syrian ruler is generally unfazed by the stream of high officers defecting to the rebels because, as DEBKAfile reported on July 2 – he has quietly made a clean sweep of long-serving elite commanders, especially Sunnis, and replaced them with younger Alawite officers, drawn from security and intelligence agencies and the loyal, exceptionally brutal Alawite Shabiha militia.
Some of the defectors are generals who were quietly retired on full pay; others, mid-ranking officers who see their prospects of promotion vanishing in the incoming surge of young Alawite officers awarded top jobs.
The latest high-ranking defector, Brig.-Gen. Manaf Tlass, 105th Brigade commander of the Republic Guard belongs to the second category, DEBKAfile’s intelligences disclose. His desertion is potentially a lot more damaging to the regime –politically rather than militarily.

He did not abscond to rebel ranks in Turkey as the Syrian opposition reported Friday, July 6, but headed for Paris to join his father, Gen. Mustafa Tlass, former Syrian Defense Minister who served Bashar Assad and his father for 40 years, and his daughter Nahed Ojjeh, widow of the leading Saudi arms dealer Akkram Ojjeh.
Both have good connections around the Arab world and are close to the Russian ruling elite in Moscow.
Mustafa Tlass left Syria five months ago over a conflict of loyalties: The prominent Sunni Tlass clan spearheaded the anti- Assad revolt in Rastan, a town near Homs. To avoid taking sides, Tass senior decamped.

His son, Brig.-Gen. Manaf, served in the Republic Guard defending the presidential place on Mount Qasioun, the nerve center of Assad’s vicious campaign to suppress dissent. As a member of the presidential inner circle, he was certainly part of the military establishment running that campaign.

Indeed, Assad rewarded his loyalty by letting him keep his job, only putting his promotion to general on hold.
Manaf, realizing his career prospects as a Sunni had been overtaken by the advancing Allawitization of the top Syrian command, decided to join his father.
According to our sources, he actually flew out of Damascus on June 26, not this week as widely reported.
From their new base in Paris, the heads of the Tlass clan have yet to decide which way to jump – whether to make use of their excellent connections in Moscow or join up with the pro-Western “Friends of Syria” Western-Arab group whose latest meeting in Paris, Friday, July 6, was chaired by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
The Assad regime would suffer a serious setback if the Tlasses opted for the West and its Arab enemies.

US diplomats are therefore going out of their way to rope them in. They have turned to Firas Tlass, the powerful Syrian clan’s Dubai-based “finance minister,” for help. Above all, they are going to great lengths to dissuade these prominent Sunnis from gravitating toward their old ties in Moscow.

Pakistan: US drones kill 24 a day after resumption of Nato supplies

MIRANSHAH, (The News): Twenty-four persons were killed and some others were injured in one of the deadliest attacks carried out by CIA-operated US spy planes in the Gorweek village of Dattakhel area, North Waziristan Agency, on Friday. There were reports that the death toll could rise as the drones had fired eight missiles and caused widespread destruction in the village.

The drone attack came just a day after the government restored the Nato supplies passing through Pakistan. The issue of the drone strikes has been a bone of contention between Pakistan and the US as Islamabad had demanded a complete end to the attacks. “The drone strike on Friday shows that the US has refused to accept Pakistan’s demand to halt these deadly attacks,” said an observer.

Official and tribal sources said that six US drones were seen flying over the Gorweek village since Friday afternoon near the Afghan border. Gorweek, which is about 65 kilometres west of Miranshah, the headquarters of North Waziristan, is close to the Urgoon area of Afghanistan’s Paktika province. Gorweek is a historical village as it served as the headquarters of Faqir of Ipi, the freedom-fighter who fought against the British colonial rule.

Sources said the drones fired eight missiles and pounded two houses and four vehicles. They said 18 people were killed initially in the air strike and 10 others were injured, some of them seriously.

The death toll soon reached 24 as six other persons died of their injuries due to lack of healthcare facilities in the area. Some of the villagers, who visited the spot, said most of the bodies were cut into pieces and burnt. They said pieces of the bodies were collected from the area and put on shawls and into plastic bags for burial. The villagers, however, added that some of the bodies were intact but mutilated beyond recognition.

Government officials also confirmed that 24 persons were killed in the drone attack. They feared the death toll could rise as some of the injured were reported to be in critical condition.Pleading anonymity, a government official said it was one of the deadliest attacks by the drones this year in the tribal areas. It was after a long gap that the US drone carried out an attack in the Dattakhel area close to the Afghan border.

The identity of the victims of the drone strike was unknown, but in most cases the target of such attacks are local militants affiliated to the Taliban group headed by Hafiz Gul Bahadur. It may be noted that the Taliban in North Waziristan, led by Hafiz Gul Bahadur, had banned the anti-polio campaign as a mark of protest over the frequent US drone attacks in their area. The Taliban in North Waziristan aren’t part of the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) led by Hakimullah Mahsud.

Israeli arrests Golan Heights physician upon return from Syria

In the occupied Goland Heights, a physician has been held in administrative detention by Israeli forces with no access to a lawyer or visiting rights from the family. Additionally Israel has placed gagging order on journalists as to the reason behind his arrest.
The identity of a man arrested by Israeli forces in the Occupied Goland heights has been confirmed following a press gag order from the Israeli authorities.
Dr. Eyad Jamil al-Jawhari, was arrested by Israeli forces on 28th June as he attempted to enter the Occupied Golan Heights at the Kuneitra border crossing.

Al-Jawhari studied medicine in Syria then decided to set up a permanent practice in his home town of Mashdaal champs. However, on numerous occasions, he along with his pregnant wife was banned from travelling across the border. Now upon entering the Goland Heights, he has been arrested and held for questioning in the Israeli Kishon prison.

Press TV spoke to the family of al-Jawhari who were concerned about his treatment inside the prison as Israel have forbidden him to see a lawyer or members of his family.

No Israeli publication has reported the reason behind his arrest, which means there is a partial gag order still in effect.

An Israeli court has issued ten days of detention for the physician, a period that can be further extended with the court’s approval.

This is not the first time al-Jawahiri being arrested and detained by Israel on his way to Syria. He has been arrested with no clear reasons when entering or leaving Syria.

As Israeli laws allow the renewal of administrative detention, there is so far no information about the length of time Dr al-Jawhari could be held.

Although the gag order was lifted, there has been no reported reason for Dr al- Jawhari’s arrest and this still brings to question whether this is part of a series of arrests to break the spirit of the Druze community or whether the Israeli forces are eager to obtain intelligence as to the situation in Syria.

Israeli forces assault shrine in occupied Golan

Israel has continued its violations against the Arab citizens in the occupied Syrian Golan heights. A group of extremists from the Israeli settlers entered the shrine of Sultan Ibrahim under the cover of darkness and they left racist slogans on the walls of the place.

This was not the first time that the settlers are being attacked in their holy places in the occupied Arab territories. It seems that the Israeli aggressive policies, which are backed by the Israeli institutions and its people, are being repeated here.

There have been many attempts in the past such as burning and destructions of holy places, and most recently writing racist slogans against Arabs and Islam on the walls of this holy place

Despite all attempts, Israeli gangs are pursuing Israeli policies while the Israeli extremist laws back them up. However, the people of the Golan affirm their adherence to defend themselves.

HRW: Jordan turning away Palestinian refugees fleeing Syria

BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Jordan has forcibly returned Palestinian refugees fleeing Syria and threatened to deport others, Human Rights Watch said Wednesday.
Since April, Jordanian authorities have arbitrarily detained Palestinians fleeing Syria in a holding center, the report said.

Thousands of Syrian refugees have entered Jordan without passing through an official border crossing after the Syrian state forces started to crush an opposition movement 16 months ago, according to the rights group.

Unlike Syrians, Palestinian refugees have been detained without possibility of release unless they return to Syria, according to Human Rights Watch.

Said al-Wadi al-Manasir, general secretary at the Jordanian Interior Ministry, told Human Rights Watch that the policy of releasing Syrians and detaining Palestinians was because Palestinians were not facing violence in Syria.

He was unable to explain why Jordan changed its policy in mid-April, before which Palestinians were freed from the detention center like Syrians once they had established their identity and found a guarantor.

Al-Manasir denied Jordan had returned any Palestinians to Syria, but refugees told Human Rights Watch that they had been forced back to the country.

Palestinians in Syria told Human Rights Watch in June that Syrian security forces are detaining hundreds of people, including Palestinians, in the Yarmouk suburb of Damascus where 200,000 Palestinians live.

They said that thousands of Palestinians have recently fled the city of Homs and its suburbs because of the violence there, as well as from Daraa due to recent heavy shelling, and have sought refuge in Yarmouk.

Onderdrukking Islamitische bevolking Myanmar

Egypt’s Mursi to visit Saudi Arabia on Wednesday

Egypt’s first Islamist president Muhammad Mursi (R) meets with Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to Egypt at the presidential palace in Cairo on July 7, 2012.
CAIRO (Reuters) — Egyptian President Muhammad Mursi will travel to Saudi Arabia on Wednesday for his first official visit abroad since he was sworn in on June 30, signaling that he wants to maintain the long-standing regional alliance.

Mursi will meet King Abdullah and then make a short pilgrimage to Mecca, Islam’s holiest site, the kingdom’s ambassador in Cairo, Mohammed al-Qattan, said on Saturday.

Qattan said he “presented President Mursi with an invitation to visit King Abdullah and the Egyptian president has accepted the invitation and will travel on Wednesday.

“President Mursi was careful to make Saudi Arabia his first visit abroad. Both leaders will meet to get to know one another and discuss ways to increase trade and investment cooperation.”

Before becoming president, Mursi headed the Freedom and Justice Party of Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood, the oldest and most established contemporary Islamist Sunni movement.

“Egyptian-Saudi relations cannot be reduced to just economic ties. They are more encompassing than that,” said Qattan.

Mursi has received an invitation from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to attend a summit of the Non-aligned Movement in Tehran on Aug. 29 but he is yet to accept.

Ties between Cairo and Tehran were severed in 1980 after Iran’s Islamic Revolution and Egypt’s recognition of Israel.

A popular uprising against former president Hosni Mubarak and Mursi’s election ended six decades of rule by former military men.

Gaza health ministry denies bacteria discovery

GAZA CITY (Ma’an) — Gaza’s Ministry of Health on Monday denied reports of a new strain of bacteria found by medical researchers in the Gaza Strip.

Ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qedreh told Ma’an there was no deadly bacteria or virus in the Gaza Strip, and Israeli reports to the contrary were designed to destroy health security in Gaza.

The Israeli daily Haaretz reported Monday that a joint Palestinian-Israeli medical research group, including renowned Gaza doctor Ezzeldeen Abu al-Aish, believe they have identified a unique strain of the MRSA bacterium to be common in Gaza City.

The project tested 600 Gaza residents and found the bacterium present in 15 percent of participants, noting that it tends to cause skin abscesses and infections.

Researchers will next work to identify the wider health impact on infected patients, the Haaretz report said.

Israeli scientists find new strain of MRSA bacteria spreading in Gaza City

Antibiotic-resistant bug may spread through cats, say researchers.

Dr. Gili Regev-Yochay in her lab at Sheba Medical Center in Tel Hashomer.

A joint initiative by Israeli and Palestinian scientists has identified that what is thought to be a unique strain of the MRSA bacterium is becoming common in Gaza City.

Dr. Gili Regev-Yochay, a physician participating in the project and a researcher at the infectious disease unit at Sheba Medical Center, Tel Hashomer, said: “We found that the bacterium is transmitted very rapidly in Gaza. At first we thought it came from a European volunteer and spread because of the overcrowding, but genetic markers of the Gaza bacterium make us believe that it’s a different strain. We assume it developed resistance to antibiotics in some unique process that occurred in Gaza.”

In recent years, the international medical establishment has become increasingly preoccupied with antibiotic-resistant bacteria, like MRSA. It is not enough that medical institutions take preventive measures against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, because it has become clear that they no longer attack only in the hospital setting but are also liable to spread in the general community.

The MRSA bacterium, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is liable to become very aggressive. In September 1999, four children in the Chicago area allegedly died suddenly of toxic shock after coming into contact with MRSA in the community, without having been hospitalized. The virulent strain called USA300, which has become one of the most aggressive bacteria and is known as a “superbug,” has been identified in several individuals in Israel but there have been no outbreaks like those reported in the United States.

‘Not the virulent strain’

In the course of the Israeli-Palestinian research some 600 Gaza residents were tested – 300 children and 300 of their parents. Nose swabs were collected and the specimens transported to Sheba Medical Center. Scientists identified the MRSA bacterium in 15 percent of those tested, but also noted that it was not the virulent USA300 strain. It was, rather, a strain that has been identified in European hospitals, but in Gaza it is present in the general community. This strain, which tend to cause skin abscesses and infections was not identified in the West Bank in subsequent testing.

The researchers also noted a connection between the risk of contagion and having a pet cat. “The bacterium is liable to be transmitted from person to person via animals, and our findings raise the suspicion that there’s a connection between the spread of the bacterium and the many cats in Gaza,” said Regev-Yochay, who is also the director of infectious diseases at the Gertner Institute for Epidemiology and Health Policy Research.

In the next stage, research will be carried out among families to explore the long-term ramifications for people who tested positive, specifically to discover whether they are at greater risk of skin infections and hospitalizations. At the same time, the scientists are working to map the genetics of the Gaza strain of MRSA together with researchers from Harvard University.

The joint Palestinian-Israeli research group was established in January 2009 during Operation Cast Lead with the help of Dr. Meir Raz of Maccabi Health Services and Dr. Mohanad Daana, a Maccabi and Hadassah University Hospital physician, with assistance from Prof. Mordechai Shani, the founder of the Gertner Institute and a 2009 Israel Prize winner.

It consists of 30 members, including family physicians and pediatricians, and infectious disease specialists from central Israel, East Jerusalem and clinics in Bethlehem, Ramallah, Nablus and Gaza. Dr. Ezzeldeen Abu al-Aish of the University of Toronto, whose three daughters were killed during Operation Cast Lead by a missile fired at his home, is also a member of the project.
