Turkey confirms Syria shot down F-4 military jet, search for pilots ongoing

Turkey had earlier said it had lost contact with one of its military aircrafts off its southeastern coast, near Syria.
Syria shot down a Turkish warplane in the eastern Mediterranean on Friday, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan’s office said in a statement.

“As a result of information obtained from the evaluation of our concerned institutions and from within the joint search and rescue operations with Syria, it is understood that our plane was brought down by Syria,” Erdogan’s office said.

Turkey would decide on its response to the incident once all of the details became clear, it said in the statement, issued after a two-hour meeting between Erdogan, members of his cabinet and the military.

His office also said that search and rescue operations were continuing for the missing pilots.

Earlier on Friday, Erdogan said he could not confirm whether Syria had admitted to shooting down a Turkish warplane in the Mediterranean.

While reports had circulated that Syria had apologized for the incident, claiming it was a mistake, Erdogan told a press conference in Ankara that he had no firm information on the apology.

We have no confirmation surrounding the Syrian apology or even that Syria has shot down the jet … The rescue operation to find the pilots continues

Arshad Harmozlo, senior adviser to the Turkish president

He had also said he could not confirm whether the plane had been shot down or crashed.

Earlier, the Turkish army said it lost radar and radio contact with one of its aircrafts on the Mediterranean near neighboring Syria, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.

The conflicting, or perhaps extra cautious, statements from the Turkish PM came after Erdogan was reportedly quoted by Haberturk daily newspaper earlier on Friday as saying: “Syria immediately offered a very serious apology for the incident and admitted it was a mistake.”

He had also been quoted by the paper as saying the two pilots of the Turkish F-4 fighter jet were alive after the incident.

“At this moment the air force and navy are conducting search and rescue operations in the western Mediterranean and luckily our pilots are alive, we have just lost a plane,” he told journalists while travelling back from Brazil.

In Ankara, Erdogan told reporters there is no news on the pilots and Turkish ships and helicopters were searching for the missing pilots together with Syrian ships.

The senior adviser to the Turkish president, Arshad Harmozlo, had said that the statement from the Turkish news report was baseless, and instead reiterated Erdogan’s comments.

“We have no confirmation surrounding the Syrian apology or even that Syria has shot down the jet … The rescue operation to find the pilots continues,” he told Al Arabiya in a telephone interview.

He also said he has no information on claims Turkish jet pilots have been captured by Syria.

Shortly after, Erdogan met military and intelligence chiefs and key ministers for a security meeting, after which he released a statement confirming Syria had downed the plane.

Earlier on Friday, Lebanon’s Hezbollah-owned Al-Manar television station had already confirmed this. The channel said that Syrian air defenses shot down the Turkish military aircraft, quoting Syrian security sources.

“Syrian security sources confirmed to a Manar correspondent in Damascus that Syrian defense forces shot down the Turkish fighter jet,” the Hezbollah-owned channel said.

Meanwhile, pro-Iranian Al-Mayadeen television station, which is based in Lebanon, quoted what it said were Turkish sources as saying a jet had been shot down by Syrian air defenses near the border with Turkey.

Tense relations

Turkey, which had drawn close to Syria before the uprising against Assad, became one of the Syrian leader’s fiercest critics when he responded violently to pro-democracy protests inspired by popular upheavals elsewhere in the Arab world.

Ankara has previously floated the possibility of setting up some kind of safe haven or humanitarian corridor inside Syria, which would entail military intervention, but has said it would undertake no such action without U.N. Security Council approval.

Turkey said it had lost contact with one of its military aircraft off its southeastern coast, and a television station said it had crashed in Syrian territorial waters.

The plane took off from Malatya airbase in the southeast at 0730 GMT and lost communication with the base at 0858 GMT in the southwest of the Hatay province bordering Syria, the military command said in a statement posted online.

“Search and rescue efforts have started immediately,” it said.

The Hurriyet daily newspaper reported that the plane had gone down in international waters and that the two airmen had been found alive and well following a search operation by Turkish forces.

Turkish warplanes regularly patrol along and off Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast.

Occupation seizes Jordanian agricultural equipment

AMMAN,(PIC)– A Jordanian official said that the Israeli occupation forces seized, on Thursday, agricultural equipment belonging to Jordanian farmers in Wadi al-Maleh area in the northern part of the Jordan Valley.

The head of the local council in Wadi Al Maleh, Aref Daraghmeh, confirmed in a press statement that the IOF have seized several water tanks and agricultural tractors in Wadi al-Maleh area in the northern part of the Jordan Valley.

Daraghmeh said that the occupation forces raided the area and towed the water tanks to a military camp used to store the seized tanks. He warned against a mass exodus from that area that relies on those water tanks to supply the agricultural lands, pointing out that the seizure of the water tanks by the Israeli forces will leave dozens of families without any source of water.

Photos: Palestinian graffiti artists penetrate heavily fortified heart of West Jerusalem ~ via @intifada

Palestinian artists penetrated the heavily fortified heart of West Jerusalem overnight and painted graffiti bearing political messages on walls, doors, construction sites and other surfaces.

The artists struck in two areas, the West Jerusalem city center (near Jaffa Road and King George Street) and the German Colony/Talbiyye area.

The city center is today full of bars and restaurants frequented by Israeli Jews and tourists. Talbiyye was a once prosperous Arab neighborhood. These areas and large swathes of West Jerusalem were ethnically cleansed of their Palestinian populations in 1948 and are now almost exclusively Jewish.

As the photos show, the art includes the map of Palestine with the Arabic prounoun أنا (“I” or “me”) and an image of a woman wearing a kaffiyeh with the word “revolt.” This image is a reminder of the central role women have played in Palestinian popular struggle. The artists plan to undertake similar actions in coming days and weeks.

Palestinian artists strike Jerusalem’s streets again with message for “occupiers and our people”

Electronic Intifada | Ali Abunimah | Tue, 01/17/2012 – 05:55

Tonight, Palestinian street artists struck again – as they had promised to do – this time in southern Jerusalem, or more specifically “in Talpiot, an Israeli commercial area, built on Palestinian land of Baqaa and Beit Safafa.”

Last week, this anonymous group of Palestinian artists left their mark in the center of western Jerusalem, symbolically reclaiming spaces from which Palestinians had been ethnically cleansed.

They have now issued a statement – in English and in Arabic – explaining their actions. Below the statements you can find photographs of their latest work.

The maps are centered on the area where the photos under each map were taken.

This is Palestine

The act of marking the streets is one that has been used in struggles all over the world as well as here in Palestine especially during the First Intifada. Street art is simply one tool that we are using in our struggle for freedom. This is our message to both our occupiers and our people here in Palestine and around the world, we are still here and our voice is still loud, we will continue to resist. It is the voice of the youth of Palestine who are struggling to change their reality every day. Until there are masses marching, the streets can send a message in another way, and we’re using a stencil and spray paint to do it. One image at a time we are aiming to break the fear and lack of motivation of our Palestinian people and call them to rise.

This is our second street art action and it is the continuation of a longer popular resistance struggle that we are all committed to. While the doors of Jerusalem remain closed to the majority of our people, our actions here are aimed at breaking the locks of this sieged city. Our first action marked the streets of the west side of Jerusalem that has been under intensive Judiaization aimed to erase Palestinian history. Our second action is in Talpiot, an Israeli commercial area, built on Palestinian land of Baqaa and Beit Safafa. This is our message to those shoppers who ignore the history of this land, ignore the call for justice, and ignore the Palestinian right of return.

Armed groups kill 25 Syrian civilians in Aleppo

File Photo shows members of the terrorist Free Syrian Army in the city of Homs.
Armed groups fighting against the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad have killed 25 more civilians in the northern province of Aleppo.
According to Syria’s official news agency, SANA, the massacre took place in Daret Azzeh area in Aleppo countryside on Friday and the victims had been kidnapped by armed gangs earlier in the day.

Some reports suggest that the victims are all government supporters. Many civilians are still being held by the terrorists and their fate remains unknown.

Meanwhile, the United Nations has announced that 1.5 million people are in need of humanitarian aid in Syria and that the growing violence was seriously hampering aid deliveries.

Damascus has also said that armed groups are hampering rescue efforts in the crisis-hit city of Homs by opening fire at the International Red Crescent and the Syrian Red Cross delegation trying to evacuate the wounded, the elders, children and women from the city.

Syrian authorities say terrorist groups are holding nearly 5,000 civilians hostage in Homs, who are in need of immediate help.

Syria has been experiencing a deadly unrest since mid-March 2011, the violence has claimed the lives of many people, including large numbers of security forces.

While the West and the Syrian opposition say the government is responsible for the killings, Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.

Mossad active in Tunisia again to abort revolution

Recent intelligence reports have shown that the ousted regime of Zine El Abidine Ben Ali had strong relations with the Israeli secret services.

The issue has reemerged after the revolution as Tunisian Human rights activists and politicians have warned against the redeployment of the Mossad agents in Tunisia to abort the revolution.

Ameur Laarayedh, the Director of the Political Bureau of the ruling Islamic party Ennahda says that the documents discovered at the Carthage Palace after the fall of the regime on January 14 2011 prove that the suspicious relations with israel date back to the early 1990s.

Local observers claim that the Israelis had a trade office in this building while many Tunisians say they are convinced that it was the headquarters of the Israel’s secret service Mossad.

The lawyer and member of the Constituent Assembly Abderraouf Ayadi asserts that hundreds of Israeli intelligence agents have spread throughout the Tunisian territory during the period of instability that Tunisia witnessed after the revolution.

The MP also says that the rise of Islamic parties to power in the region is being perceived as a threat to Israel.

The revolution has brought down a brutal dictator who has remained in power for 23 years with the support of foreign secret services.

Meanwhile, the spread of the Islamic mode of thinking is the sign that the masses will react to any attempts at jeopardizing the state security in Tunisia.

One Palestinian killed, 2 injured in fresh Israeli airstrike on Gaza

Palestinian mourners carry the bodies of Thair al-Bik and Mohammed al-Khaldi , who were killed in an Israeli airstrike, during their funeral in Jabaliya Refugee Camp, northern Gaza Strip, on June 21, 2012.

Palestinian mourners carry the bodies of Thair al-Bik and Mohammed al-Khaldi , who were killed in an Israeli airstrike, during their funeral in Jabaliya Refugee Camp, northern Gaza Strip, on June 21, 2012.
At least one Palestinian has been killed and two others injured in an Israeli airstrike on the besieged Gaza Strip, medical sources say.
According to Palestinian sources, the airstrike hit al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza on Friday.

The latest casualty brought to nine the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza by Israeli airstrikes since Monday. A 14-year-old boy was killed in an Israeli drone attack in the Gaza City’s Zaitoun neighborhood on Wednesday.

Israeli military frequently bombs the Gaza Strip, claiming the actions are being conducted for defensive purposes. However, disproportionate force is always used, in violation of international law, and civilians are often killed or injured.

Gaza has been under Israeli siege since 2007, causing a decline in the standard of living, unprecedented levels of unemployment, and unrelenting poverty.

Last week, fifty international aid groups and UN agencies urged Tel Aviv to open borders of Gaza, saying the blockade has harmed Gazans.
