Arab League names Jordanian diplomat as envoy to Syria

Cairo, Feb 12 (Petra) — Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby has approved the nomination by Arab foreign ministers of former Jordanian Foreign Minister Abdul Ilah Al Khatib as the regional organisation’s envoy to Syria.

An informed source in Cairo told Petra that Elaraby had accepted the resignation of head of an Arab observer mission to Syria, Sudanese Lt. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed al-Dabi, which he submitted today.

Elaraby met Khatib ahead of an Arab League Council meeting on Syria during which the veteran diplomat and former United Nations special envoy to Libya accepted the new job, which needed the council’s final endorsement.
